High temperature superconductors (RE-Ba-Cu-O, RE-Ba-Sr-Cu-O, Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O, etc.), nanocomposite oxides (M-2411 / Y-Ba-Cu-O), and transparent conductive oxides (metal doped ZnO) are grown as epitaxial and polycrystalline thin films and multi-layers. Besides, piezoelectrics and ferroelectrics (ZnO, BaTiO3, PZT, etc.) and polymer-based composites are fabricated as thin films.

Thin films are mainly produced by "pulsed-laser deposition" (PLD). The optimisation of the PLD process, the correlation of process parameters with the properties of grown layers, and the synthesis of metastable compounds are investigated. Among the other methods employed for film fabrication are standard and electron-beam evaporation and spin-on techniques. The physical characterization of thin films includes investigations of the surface morphology, crystallinity and texture, micro and nanostructure, and element analysis, and of the dielectric, electrical, superconducting, and optical properties.

The patterning of thin films is performed by photo-lithographic techniques in combination with wet chemical etching and by laser ablation. Nano-patterning of films is performed by masked ion-beam lithography.

Ceramics are synthesized from commercially available precursors and powders are fabricated by different methods (coprecipitation, sol-gel techniques, etc.). These ceramics are used as target materials in PLD, and for fundamental investigations.
