Johannes Kepler University (JKU): High Level of Studies

The JKU considers itself an anchor in support balancing applied-oriented research and base-knowledge research, research-led, future oriented teaching, innovative cooperation efforts on a national and international level and applying both social and managerial responsibility.

The JKU’s campus location allows the university to draw strongly on its potential, allowing for interdisciplinary knowledge to merge and consolidate at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics & Business, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Engineering & Natural Sciences. This interdisciplinary approach is unique for an Austrian university and – as also mentioned in the university’s mission statement – these features substantially benefit the university.

International Focus

The JKU aspires to raise its international profile by actively supporting international student and faculty exchange programs designed to strengthen both academic and personal development. In an effort to facilitate the university’s global vision, the university currently has over 200 partnership agreements with over 100 universities around the world, attesting to the importance the university places on boosting its internationalization efforts!

Anchored in the university’s Development Plan, the JKU’s strengths also include:

  • Top quality interdisciplinary approach to research, teaching, and continual education that has been reinforced in recent years through supportive educational policies and facilitated by the physical proximity of almost all JKU institutes located on campus.
  • Strategic partnership agreements with the Upper Austrian government and the city of Linz which, among other things, is reflected in the work by the Linz University Fund.
  • Above-average, large amounts of external funding: an extensive proportion of research is financed by EU research programs, national research funding programs, regional research and technology programs, direct cooperation with the local business community, and the public sector.
  • Modern building structures designed to meet the needs of today: The Science Park concept brought externally located institutions back to campus, enabling a rapid expansion of the polymer engineering program.
  • The development and application of modern educational methods: computer-assisted teaching which enables students to partly complete their studies independent of time and location constraints. In cooperation with the FernUniversität Hagen, the JKU also offers degree programs via distance learning at several locations throughout Austria.
  • Pioneering role in gender research. The JKU also strongly supports work-life balance for its students and employees with families. The university’s commitment will be rewarded: The Federal Ministry of Economy, Family & Youth has presented the JKU with the "Audit hochschuleundfamilie" certificate.

The JKU is Upper Austria’s largest institution for education and research and believes in a social mission that extends beyond its students. In recent years, the JKU has strongly supported youth programs and programs designed to attract young people to the world of science.

The JKU’s strategic middle-term goal is and remains to become one of Europe’s top universities. A prerequisite to achieve this goal is continual excellence in teaching and research conducted both outside of the university as well as internally. Faculty and staff at the JKU are proud of the university’s accomplishments thus far and strive continually to initiate improvements as well as further develop research and teaching.
