Bachelor's Degree in Technical Physics
The academic undergraduate degree program in Technical Physics teaches students how to independently solve problems by using methods developed in physics, whether in basic and applied research, as an employee at company, or as an entrepreneur. The program fulfills all pre-requisities for admission to a graduate degree program in Technical Physics or other related fields at Austrian universities or universities outside of Austria.
The curriculum qualifies graduates of technical physics to work in very different areas, particularly within interdisciplinary teams, by providing sound base-knowledge education focused on mastering experimental, theoretical and numerical methods. When completing the Bachelor's degree thesis, students are also confronted with learning how to solve current problems in research and/or industrial development.
The degree program conveys the following key technical skills:
- An overview of the important issues in physics selected on the basis of their fundamental importance as well as relevance to expected future developments in physics and their corresponding applications. Knowledge on how to use concepts and solution methods; particular emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches.
- Insight into important theories in physics, their logical and mathematical structure, their connections to experiments and observations as well as the ability to independently perform simple calculations.
- Familiarity with the most important experimental methods; capacity to critically analyze and question experimental data in terms of their relevance to physics as well as display and present the results. Understanding the nature and insight into working methods and applications of research in physics and implementing results in technology and other applications.
- The ability to use literature in physics and other relevant areas as well as other technical information. This includes what is necessary to understand literature of required basic information, a solid understanding of technical English, as well as the ability to use literature to resolve questions and problems and independently incorporate information to new areas.
- If required, the willingness and ability to work well in an interdisciplinary team environment; ability to represent one's own research results or textbook information to both a professional audience as well as to non-specialists interested in the field.
Due to the diversity and range of the demanding program curriculum, graduates can pursue engineering careers ranging from jobs at industrial companies to basic research, as R&D technicians at large industries as well as other areas in which the capacity and capability to address and solve problems are in demand. In the public sector, graduates can pursue careers in environmental protection, process engineering and testing, and at hospitals in fields such as medical engineering. Business consulting and software design companies, as well as banks, are also hiring an increasing number of physicists.
