Bachelor's Degree in Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics has facilitated one of the greatest scientific advances of the 20th century - decoding the human genome - an important first step on the journey to solving the "mystery of life". Bioinformatics has now been established as an independent discipline in science and education. Bioinformatics is an important link between computer science, mathematics, statistics and life sciences such as biology, genetics, medicine, or pharmaceuticals. With the help of methods in computer science, Bioinformatics aims to analyze biological data, mathematics, and statistics as well as to interpret, visualize, and simulate data in order to understand molecular biological processes. This knowledge offers new opportunities and applications in different areas:

• Biology: to study cellular processes and obtain new insight into developmental processes, to construct the evolutionary tree of life. Focus is on molecular biology disciplines.
• Medicine, to understand the pathogenesis and processes of diseases.
• Genetics, to identify the genetic cause(s) of disease and study the origin and evolution of mankind
• Pharmaceuticals, to develop new drugs

The Bachelor's degree program in Bioinformatics is a cross-border program in cooperation with the University of South-Bohemia in České Budějovice (Budweis), Czech Republic. The first year of the study takes place in Budweis, the second year of study takes place in Linz, and the third year of studies is spent in both cities. The program focuses on base-knowledge computer sciences, statistics, mathematics, biology, genetics, and biochemistry. Graduates receive degrees from both universities (joint-degree program).

Career Prospects

Graduates of Bioinformatics can pursue various professional occupations as this field of interdisciplinary study combines Life Sciences and IT education, serving to combine numerous fields. Graduates can work in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food technology and biotech companies, or provide businesses with the software needed for applications in biology, physics, medicine and chemistry.
