PhD Program in Economics – Doctorate Degree Program

The PhD Program in Economics (doctorate degree program) is carried out jointly between the Faculty of Economic and Statistics, University of Innsbruck and the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics & Business at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. In compliance with § 54 Sec. 1 of the Universities Act 2002, the program has been allocated to studies in Social and Economic Sciences.

Graduates of the PhD Program in Economics (doctorate degree program) are expected to be active in:

  • conduct and publish theoretical and empirical research in economics
  • teach economics
  • apply theoretical and empirical research methods to solve economic policy problems and develop solutions to new problems.

Graduates of the PhD Program in Economics (doctorate degree program) can pursue careers in various professional fields:

  • at universities
  • at research institutions and other post-secondary educational institutions
  • at research departments located at the European Central Bank, the Austrian National Bank, other banks, rating agencies, regional development agencies, market research organizations as well as at other companies and commercial organizations
  • at research departments located within international organizations such as the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development), EU (European Union), IMF (International Monetary Fund) and the World Bank
  • at research departments located within public institutions, interest groups and NGOs (non governmental organizations)
  • in politics or in the media

Educational Objectives

Graduates of the PhD Program in Economics (doctorate degree program) acquire the skill sets to

  • compose academic and scientific papers in compliance with international standard for peer-reviewed publications;
  • participate in the international research network;
  • develop independent research programs of scientific integrity and successfully incorporate and implement them at national and international research funding agencies;
  • professionally communicate with peers in the scientific community as well as in society as to corresponding areas of expertise.

These skill sets are taught during the program by:

  • providing instruction in regards to relevant research methods at the highest level
  • presenting critical introduction to international scientific and academic debates
  • providing additional qualifications (such as project management skills, philosophy of science, communication skills)
  • requiring the use of new media for both scientific/academic communication as well as academic instruction in the classroom
  • composing publications, particularly in the context of small research groups
