JKU Open Lab

One of the JKU’s many goals includes encouraging young people to learn more about engineering and natural sciences and perhaps even one day pursue an academic degree in Engineering and Natural Sciences. The JKU Open Lab is a new, hands-on facility for children and teens to delve deeper into the exciting world of chemistry.

The JKU Open Lab is an external educational area where young people can conduct simple, safe, hands-on experiments in fields of engineering and natural sciences. Students learn what role chemistry plays in food coloring, colors, clothing, cleaning agents, and cosmetics. The JKU aims to supplement material taught at school with a better understanding of practical applications and show students how interesting, versatile, and exciting Natural Sciences can be.
The JKU Open Lab was created with the support of the Upper Austrian government and Borealis. Fees apply for lab use.



The JKU Open Lab is a new, hands-on facility for children and teens between the ages of 5 and 18 designed help school-age students delve deeper into the world of chemistry and learn why it is a big part of everyday life. The programs are age appropriate and trained supervisors will be on hand to facilitate the learning experience.

Programs have been designed for the following age groups:

» Kindergarten and primary school students (Classes 1 and 2)
» Primary school students (Classes 3 and 4)
» Middle school students (Classes 5 – 8)
» High school students (Classes 9 – 12)
» General interest groups

Kindergarten and primary school students can conduct a series of simple and safe experiments that will surprise and delight as well as serve an educational purpose. Students in this age group will engage in exciting, hands-on experiments focusing on water, air, carbon dioxide, colors and polymers.
Middle school and high school students will conduct more complex and comprehensive experiments to learn more about how chemistry impacts our everyday lives.
