Human Medicine - Bachelor's Degree Program

Beschreibung: In Fall 2014, the JKU Linz introduced a new academic degree program: Human Medicine. In cooperation with the Medical University of Graz, the Johannes Kepler University Linz is the first Austrian university to offer medical studies in an undergraduate/graduate degree format.

Scientific research at the JKU Linz focuses on health services research and clinical ageing, two interdisciplinary research fields that both deal with the changing needs of a modern healthcare system. The JKU Linz supports strong interdisciplinary cooperation between the faculties. Numerous institutes and departments at the JKU conduct medically related research. Studies in Human Medicine benefit from strong synergies that support science, academics, and teaching.

The JKU will accept 120 students to the Bachelor's degree program in Human Medicine for the 2017/2018 academic year, . The program's capacity will gradually increase and by 2022/2023, the university expects to accept 300 first-year students. Students accepted to the Bachelor's degree program in Human Medicine will complete the four-semester pre-clinical part of the program at the Medical University of Graz. The fifth and sixth semester of the program will take place at the JKU. In the context of the cooperation between the two universities, 120 students (300 at full capacity) will complete the pre-clinical section of the program at the Medical University of Graz.

The joint Bachelor's degree program in Human Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University Linz and the Medical University of Graz focuses on broad and highly methodological basic quality education for medical students ensured by the provision of scientific principles and the contexts of ethical foundations in communication skills and basical practical medical skills. In addition to professional competency, the program emphasizes teamwork and internships as well as social skills, the ability to work with colleagues and supervisors and members of medically related professions, and the ability to communicate effectively with patients. It is important to introduce students to realistic medical training and practical experience as a doctor as early on as possible. The program involves students in hands-on activities at medical departments as early as the first semester of the program. Students earn a clinical traineeship license during the second semester and complete a mandatory clinical internship during the sixth semester.

Program Duration: 6 semesters
Students will complete the first to fourth semester at the Medical University of Graz. The fifth and sixth semester will take place at the JKU in Linz.

Academic degree: The Bachelor's degree program in Human Medicine is considered successfully completed once students have passed all academic requirements in accordance with the curriculum, including a Bachelor's degree thesis and all elective courses. Students will not be awarded an academic degree.
