Chemistry Experiment Triggers Explosion: 3 Students Suffer Minor Injuries

On Tuesday, June 22 at approximately 9:00 am there was an explosion during a routine experiment in the laboratory at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) involving the organic solvent tetraheydrofuran (THF). The resulting shockwave slightly injured three students and damaged three laboratories.

The Master's Degree Program in Legal and Business Aspects in Technics is a Complete Success: Information Session for Prospective Students on June 23

Approximately 200 students are currently taking advantage of one of the latest academic degree programs offered at the JKU and have enrolled in the new Master’s degree program Legal and Business Aspects in Technics. Beginning in Fall 2009, graduates of engineering or natural sciences can acquire legal and business expertise in the context of a customized academic degree program. Due to the immense interest, an information session for prospective students will take place on June 23, 2010 at the JKU. Beginning at 6:00 pm in the Uni Center (Rep. Rm. G), prospective students can learn more about this very successful academic degree program. Institute faculty and staff will be on hand to address all questions and concerns.

Celebrating New University Professors at the JKU: Inaugural Professorial Lectures on Current Fields of Education and Research

The traditional Inaugural Lecture series presented this semester by the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business as well as the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, provides exciting insight into each newly appointed professor’s field of education and research and as well as closer contact to science and research, the business community, community politicians and the public. Two newly appointed professors at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business will hold their interesting inaugural lectures on their respective fields of teaching and research on June 21, 2010 beginning at 4:00 pm.

The Majority of Austrian Diocesan Priests Support Abolishing Celibacy Laws

Results from a study titled “Standpoint Regarding Celibacy Laws” conducted by students at the Department of Sociology at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in the context of a research internship under the supervision of Assistant Prof. Dr. Josef Lins revealed that six out of ten Diocesan priests in Austria support abolishing celibacy laws.

JKU University Seminar Wins European Enterprise Award 2010

The university seminar “Self-Employment in the Creative Industry” developed by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Organizational Development at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz won a European Enterprise Award 2010. The award ceremony took place on May 31 in Madrid following the EU conference “Getting SMEs on the Road to Recovery” and was presented by the Vice President of the European Commission Antonio Tajani (Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship).
