Theory on “Fear of Cultural Diversity”: A Fear of Genetic Engineering and Migration, Leading to Racism

A team of sociologists under a.Univ.Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wagner, Dr. Nicole Kronberger and Dr. Peter Holtz (Department of Social and Economic Psychology) have developed a theory on the psychological mechanisms that induce a “fear of cultural diversity”. One result of the study indicates that although embracing diversity would take great cultural effort, it could be done.

The JKU Mourns the Death of Kurt W. Rothschild

Considered a doyen of business studies in Austria as well as one of the founding fathers of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business at the JKU, em.Univ.Prof. Dr. Kurt W. Rothschild passed away recently in Vienna, shortly before his 97th birthday. The JKU community has lost a renowned academic and scientist who had an excellent reputation in Austria and around the world.

Development of New Infrared Semiconductor Laser

Two research groups under a.Univ.Prof. Dr. Gunther Springholz and a.Univ.Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Heiss (Institute of Semiconductor and Solid State Physics) have developed a new infrared semiconductor wafer laser enabling continuous lasing at a higher wavelength. These small lasers have wide range applications, including areas of environmental analysis, climate research, medical diagnostics, gas sensing and product engineering. These successful new developments were recently highlighted in the renowned journal “Nature Photonics”.
