Prof. Tichy at the 15th Annual Rothschild Lecture Series at the JKU

The 15th annual Rothschild Lecture at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz drew a large, enthusiastic audience. Business expert Prof. Gunther Tichy addressed the packed room as he spoke about the causes of the banks and debt crisis.

  • Avalanche Danger – Who’s Afraid of the Glorious Snow?

    As fun and exciting as skiing and back-country skiing can be, potential danger also lurks in the mountains. One would assume that winter sports enthusiasts in particular would be more aware of potentially dangerous situations. However, the SafePowder study conducted by the Institute of Applied Statistics (IFAS) together with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (Boku) indicates that many people underestimate dangerous snow conditions. The results: just over 40% of skiers and back-country skiers misjudge the risk.

    JKU Honorary Doctorate Degree for Prof. Alexander K. Belyaev

    On Monday, November 19, Professor Alexander K. Belyaev (St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University and Director at the Institute for Problems in Mechanical Engineering at the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg) was presented with an honorary doctorate degree in Technical Sciences at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. Russian ambassador Dr. Sergej Netschajew was in attendance as Prof. Belyaev was honored for his outstanding scientific and academic contributions in the field of Mechanics and Mechatronics as well as his commitment and dedication to Mechatronic studies at the JKU.

    Invitation to the 15th Annual Kurt W. Rothschild Lecture at the JKU Linz – "Banks and Debt Crisis: Causes, Aftermath, Proposed Solutions"

    The 15th annual Kurt W. Rothschild Lecture at the JKU Linz on November 22, 2012 will feature a presentation by business expert Prof. Gunther Tichy. The researcher has taught at the University of Graz for many years and served as head of the Institute of Technology Assessment (Austrian Academy of Sciences) as well as at the Department of Business Cycle Analysis and Forecasts (Austrian Institute of Economic Research).

    JKU Crystals Open New Horizons in Optics and Electronics

    Life without some of today’s electronics is unimagineable. Rapid developments in today’s technology mean that silicium - a fundamental component of computers and other devices – is being pushed to its physically-defined limits. Under Prof. Alberta Bonanni, a team at the JKU is currently involved in an international project focused on searching for new solutions. In the meanwhile, not only has research on gallium nitride been published in the journal „Nature Scientific Reports”, but the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble has even declared selected highlights of this project to be among the most important research work conducted this year.

    Road Traffic Monitoring Software

    Together with the city of Linz, researchers at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz are involved in a joint project titled "CSI Linz" aimed at the development of road traffic monitoring software to help facilitate the flow of city traffic. In the future, the software will help to alleviate traffic jams.

    Drug Rehabilitation vs. Prison - International Study on Drug Abuse Policies

    Under the management of JKU Prof. Dr. Richard Soyer and together with health professionals, psychologists and health economists at the Medical University of Vienna and the Research Hospital in Barcelona, legal professionals and criminologists at the universities of Linz and Krakow conducted a two-year international study exploring drug addiction treatment in Poland, Austria, and Spain. With financial support from the Open Society Initiative (Switzerland), this interdisciplinary study includes both medical and legal aspects as well as recommendations for future drug addiction treatment.
