JKU Honorary Doctorate Degree Presented to Prof. Harald Niederreiter

On Wednesday, June 25, 2014, Prof. Harald Niederreiter (Johann Radon Institute, Austrian Academy of Sciences) was presented with an honorary doctorate degree in Technical Sciences by the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. Prof. Niederreiter was honored for his outstanding scientific and academic achievements in the fields of numerical analysis, number theory and the theory of Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods as well as supporting research by colleagues in the area of mathematics at the JKU.

Academic Experts in Three Areas: First Graduate of the “Information Electronics” Program

The academic degree program in Information Electronics began in fall 2008 and is a relatively new addition to the academic degree programs offered at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, Daniel Bartel of Linz became the first student to celebrate the successful completion of this new and very unique program in Austria.

Made by School Students: Exciting Robot Combat at the JKU

28 teams from eight higher level secondary schools located throughout Upper Austria brought their homemade robots to the Johannes Kepler University Linz to compete at the June 17th finale of the "Technik erleben" program. Only those robots that could fulfill the required tasks during the preliminary round were able to compete for a podium spot. In the end, Team "Power Rangers" (BRG Fadingerstraße school in Linz) came in first while second place went to team "Grüne Gefahr" (also from the BRG Fadingerstraße school), and team "mad DAY" (BRG Wels/Wallererstraße) took home third.

100 Applicants Attend JKU Information Session: "Entrance Examination for Human Medicine"

342 applicants are signed up to take the July 4th entrance examination for admission to the new academic degree program in Human Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University. 60 applicants will be accepted to the program. On June 12, Univ. Prof. DDr. Herbert Kalb (JKU Vice Rector for Teaching), the Austrian Student Union at the JKU, and representatives from the Medical University of Graz held a joint information session at the JKU campus in HS1. Over 100 applicants mostly from Upper Austria took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the entrance examination.

INVITATION to an Information Session at the JKU: "Entrance Examination for Human Medicine"

The new academic degree program in Human Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University Linz will kick-off this fall with 60 enrolled students. 342 people have applied for admission and will take the required entrance examination at the JKU on July 4, 2014 in the hopes of getting a coveted spot in the program. In preparation for the examination, the JKU Vice-Rector for Teaching and the Austrian Student Union will hold a joint information session about the entrance examination on June 12. Applicants can learn more about the test schedule on July 4 as well as the ceremony to celebrate the new Medical Faculty on September 29. See invitation below (pdf).

Family-Friendly Companies: The JKU is Among Austria’s Top 3

Pursuing a career or academic studies in addition to family responsibilities? The Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz has implemented sustainable measures in support of work-life balance. On Wednesday, June 11, 2014, the university was recognized as one of Austria’s three top family-friendly companies in the category of “public-law companies/institutions”.

JKU Pond Race: The Wacky Race Around the Uni Pond

Yesterday’s event surely made a few ducks stop and stare: The JKU Pond Race - a special kind of fundraising event - took place at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz on June 11, 2014. Over 300 students ran a total of 6,017 laps around the university pond and all for a good cause! For each lap around the pond that participants ran, skated or walked around while wearing a silly costume, the Sparkasse OÖ donated €1 to the Kinderhilfswerk Linz.

Dr. Hans Riegel Award Presented to Young Science Pupils

In cooperation with the State Education Authority of Upper Austria and the Kaiserschild Private Foundation, on June 3, 2014 the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz presented the Dr. Hans Riegel Awards in recognition of outstanding academic work by local school students. The awards honored the three best submitted academic papers by students in graduating high school classes. School students from throughout Upper Austria were encouraged to apply and the jury received many outstanding submissions.

Invitation to Press Conference: “Gmunden Retreat on NeuroIS 2014”

Insight in to the most recent developments in neuroscience research: The 6th annual academic conference “Gmunden Retreat on NeuroIS” will take place from June 5-7, 2014 in Gmunden. The event will host experts in information system research as well as neurosciences from around the world (Canada to Finland to Australia) in the Traunsee area. The meeting will kick off on Thursday, June 5, with a press conference.

Austrian President Fischer Honors JKU Doctoral Graduates

At a graduation ceremony on Monday, June 2, 2014, Austrian President Heinz Fischer was on campus to honor two doctoral graduates at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. DI Thomas Lichtenegger and DI Roland Schatz graduated with doctorate degrees in Technical Sciences under the auspices of the Austrian federal president. The two graduates completed all classes and examinations during their schooling and at the university (Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, JKU) with “distinction”.
