“Tunnel Vision”: Proof of Driver Stress While Transiting Road Tunnels

Austria is a land of mountains and thus a land of road tunnels. Many drivers feel insecure when driving in tunnels. The Institute for Pervasive Computing at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz has proven driver anxiety in road tunnels and the study results were recently presented at the “2014 Automotive UI” conference in Seattle (USA). One surprising find was that passengers in tunnels also have the same responses as the drivers.

Lightweight Construction Meets Mechatronics: New CD Lab at the JKU

Lightweight materials and components aim to reduce weight – such as for parts used in automobile and aircraft construction – whilst maintaining structural integrity. The results include thin-walled components made of high performance materials, such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics. Sophisticated calculated models and special computer programs have been developed to perform elaborate and complex stress tests to ensure that these optimized designs are sustainable and safe. The new Christian Doppler Laboratory for Structural Strength Control of Lightweight Construction will focus on issues in this field. The new CD lab celebrated its official grand opening on October 27 at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. The CD lab’s main sponsor is the Austrian Federal Ministry for Science, Research and Economics (BMWFW).

JKU Inaugural Lectures by Prof. Weichselbaumer, Prof. Futschik and Prof. Fink

On Monday, October 20, 2014, the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz extended an invitation to attend inaugural lectures by Univ.Prof. Mag. Dr. Doris Weichselbaumer (Institute for Women’s Studies and Gender Research), Univ.Prof. MMag. Dr. Matthias Fink (Institute for Innovation Management) and Univ.Prof. Dr. Andreas Futschik (Institute for Applied Statistics). In front of over 120 guests, the three JKU professors from the Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics and Business held the traditional inaugural lecture in the university’s Rep. Rooms.

Clinical Research and Teaching in Upper Austria - Upper Austrian Hospitals as Strategic Partners at the Faculty of Medicine

The JKU Faculty of Medicine continues to take on a more concrete form. In addition to eight non-clinical institutes and 24 clinical institutes, four research institutes (oncology, cardiovascular, neurosciences and a research institute for musculoskeletal biomechanics) will form the clinical research on ageing and will be available to doctors outside of the Kepler University Hospital. In addition, there will be two interdisciplinary centers – one for medical technology and another for research in health services.

Talented Youth: 42 “Young Scientists” Honored at the JKU

Over 100 guests attended the closing ceremony for young gifted and talented students in the “JKU Young Scientists” program at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. 42 school students in various subject areas were honored at a first-ever joint ceremony. The high quality of the students’ work was impressive: one student’s work has already been put in place at a company.

JKU Research: Federal Minister Honors Prof. Weichselbaumer

On Wednesday, October 15, 2014, Prof. Doris Weichselbaumer (head of the Institute for Women’s Studies and Gender Research, Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz) was presented with the 2014 Käthe Leichter Award by Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek, Austrian Federal Minister for Education and Women’s Affairs.

In Demand: The JKU’s First Doctoral Candidate to Graduate in Polymer Engineering Technologies

In 2009, Rector Richard Hagelauer’s deepest desire to create an academic degree program in Polymer Engineering Technologies at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz became a reality. Developed together in cooperation with partner companies Borealis and OMV, one of the first “pioneer students” will now graduate. Markus Povacz is the first doctoral candidate in Engineering Sciences to incorporate Polymer Engineering Technologies in his work and complete his doctorate program.

COMET K-Project "imPACts" with Participation by Three JKU Institutes Opens

The COMET K-Project "imPACts" began on September 1, 2014 and officially opened at the JKU Linz on October 13. "imPACts" is an application-oriented research project for process analysis conducted by RECENDT Ltd. The four-year project (to 31.08.2018) involves 19 partners (11 companies and 8 research partners, including three JKU institutes) and has a budget of 6.7 million euros.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry with JKU Tie-In

The 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry will go to Stefan W. Hell (Germany), William E. Moerner and Eric Betzig (USA) for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. In the late 90s, Prof. Thomas Klar (head of the Institute for Applied Physics at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz) wrote his doctoral dissertation under Prof. Hell and at the time, their experiments were considered pioneering. Today, Prof. Klar is continuing Prof. Hell’s research in STED technology (Stimulated Emission Depletion).

Artificially More Efficient Than Naturally: JKU Researchers Succeed in Creating Artificial Photosynthesis

As one of the most important chemical processes on earth, photosynthesis makes it possible to directly store the sun’s energy. Until now, only plants and some other organisms have been able to photosynthesize. Now researchers at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz have also artificially re-created the process. For the first time, a research team led Prof. Günther Knör (head of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, JKU) has succeeded in taking an essential step towards fuel production and CO2 fixation using artificial photosynthesis.

Visualization Software Developed by the JKU, Graz and Harvard Designed to Better Understand Cancer

Modern biomedical research is conducted primarily using computers that collect and analyze tremendous amounts of patient, health, and disease data. The information is a veritable treasure trove for clinicians and biologists such as, for example, when searching for genetic mutations that cause cancer. However, it is nearly impossible to manually browse and process the amount of information available. A joint project between the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz with the TU Graz and Harvard University (USA) has developed pioneering software. The story is now featured in the journal “Nature Methods”.

Measuring Molecules: World’s First Unique Experiment at the JKU Excites Experts

Tracking single spins: Up until now, previous spin measurements (the intrinsic angular momentum of the smallest particles) required a large number of spins. Scientists at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz have successfully conducted the world’s first single spin magnetic resonance experiment. This research breakthrough conducted by Prof. Reinhold Koch and Assist. Prof. Stefan Müllegger has now been published in the renowned journal “Physical Review Letters”.
