March 31: 15th JKU Wilhelm Macke Award Presented to Dominik Kreil

This year’s three top graduate theses in physics were presented in a clear, concise way at the finale of this year’s Wilhelm Macke Awards at the JKU. The audience - consisting mostly of school students - served as jury for the best presentation and selected Dominik Kreil as the winner.

March 25: The Number of Admissions to Medicine Doubled at the JKU

For the first time, the Johannes Kepler University will accept 120 students to the degree program in Medicine for the 2016/2017 academic year, an increase from the 60 students accepted last year. Register to take the admissions examination by March 31.

March 22: Nobel Prize Laureate Alan Heeger at the JKU

American chemist and physicist, Alan J. Heeger, celebrated his 80th birthday in January. To mark the occasion, the Johannes Kepler University of Linz organized an international symposium in his honor on March 21, 2016. The Nobel Prize laureate not only attended the event in person, he also held a presentation.

March 9: JKU Researcher Invited to Upcoming Nobel Laureate Meeting

March 18: Simultaneously Faithful and Unfaithful: Antibodies in Relationships

Over a lifetime, our immune system protects us against invading pathogens and antibodies take over essential functions in our blood. These antibodies bind to pathogens in order to fight them, a process that DI Jürgen Strasser (Institute for Biophysics) has been exploring in detail. His will present his findings at the finale of the Wilhelm Macke Awards on March 31, 2016.

March 16: JKU Researchers Develop New Methods to Suppress Vibrations

When technical devices, such as motors or washing machine vibrate, the vibrations can create an annoying amount of noise. JKU researchers at the Institute of Technical Mechanics (department head: o.Univ. Prof. Hans Irschik) conducted lab experiments and have managed to develop a cost-effective method to suppress these kinds of vibrations.

The 66th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting will take place from June 26 – July 1. Currently, 30 Nobel Prize winners are expected to attend and discuss vary topics in the physics. Over 400 young scientists from around the world underwent a rigorous selection process in order to be able to attend the meeting and one junior researcher from the Johannes Kepler University Linz will be part of the group.

March 14: International Careers and Family – More Difficult for Austrian Women

The number of women who would like to pursue an international career without sacrificing having a family is growing exponentially. A research project conducted at the Johannes Kepler University Linz explored questions such as whether or not both an international career and family can be successfully managed and how this works in other countries. The result: on an international scale, Austrian women have it the hardest.

March 11: Let's Get Excited! Excitement in an Electron’s Social Network

Electrons are two-faced: we know them as helpers that race through cables in our household appliances and fear them when lightning strikes. Dominik Kreil, a young physicist at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, has focused closely on the exciting interplay between electrons. He will present his research results at the finale for the Wilhelm Macke Award on March 31, 2016.

March 10: Cooperation: JKU and GE Healthcare Improve Ultrasound Image Quality

While ultrasound images of an unborn child can bring joy to expectant parents, these images are also indispensable when it comes to diagnostic purposes.
GE Healthcare, a leading supplier of ultrasound equipment, is working together with the Institute for Signal Processing (ISP) at the Johannes Kepler University Linz to find a way to significantly improve the technology used to measure ultrasound signals.

March 10: Another “Home Game” for the JKU at the 2nd Annual Linz Science Slam

The sold-out 2nd annual Linz Science Slam at the Posthof proved to be a ‘home game’ for JKU researchers. Martyna Grydlik emerged as the winner, sporting a laser sword, a rubber chicken, and electrons.

March 8: Culinary “Oscar” for the JKU TeichWerk

The Young Bizz Award, considered the ‘Oscar’ in the culinary world, is presented annually at the Gastrobizz conference. This year, the Young Bizz Award goes to… the JKU TeichWerk!

March 3: Poison Ivy as Wildlife Food: Planthoppers Can Break Toxins Down

Planthoppers belonging to the issus coleoptratus species are commonly found on campus at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. From there, it is a short trip to the lab where – by chance - researchers discovered a unique ability: they are surprisingly efficient when it comes to breaking down poisons

March 2: Sparking Girls’ Interest for Engineering: Girls’ Day Junior at the JKU

Once again, the Johannes Kepler University Linz took part in the Girls’ Day initiative.The initial kick-off for Girls’ Day Junior was organized for girls from the 3rd and 4th classes at primary schools and designed to spark girls' interests in engineering and natural sciences.

March 2: Bombarded in a Mini Universe by “minions” and “mini ions”

The way charged atomic particles (ions) interact with matter is extremely important: when treating tumors with radiation, for example, particle beams are used to kill cancer cells but leave surrounding healthy tissue unharmed. DI Barbara Bruckner BSc from the Johannes Kepler University Linz focused her graduate degree thesis on this topic.

DI Bruckner’s research is one of three theses nominated for the Wilhelm Macke Award. The Awards will take place at the JKU on March 31.
