em. Prof. Dr. Michael Hartmann

Born in 1952 in Paderborn, Germany, Michael Hartmann is a retired professor for Sociology at the TU Darmstadt. He graduated with his Abitur from the classical Theodorianum school, and studied sociology, political science, philosophie, history and German in Marburg and Hannover, 1976 M.A., 1979 doctorate, and post-doctorate in 1983. Research Fellowship awarded by the DFG. Between 1984 - 1999 he was a guest professor and substitute professor. From 1999 - 2014 he was a professor of Sociology at the TU Darmstadt. His research focuses on an international comparison of elite management and university research.

His most important publications: "Der Mythos von den Leistungseliten, Frankfurt a. M. 2002; Elitesoziologie, Frankfurt a. M. 2004; Eliten und Macht in Europa, Frankfurt a. M. 2007; Soziale Ungleichheit – Kein Thema für die Eliten? Frankfurt a. M. 2013. Die globale Wirtschaftselite. Eine Legende. Frankfurt a.M. 2016." In 2002 he received the Thyssen Award for the Best Social-Scientific Essay of the Year, the 2010 Thyssen Award for the second Best Social-Scientific Essay of the Year, and the 2008 German Society for Sociology Award for outstanding achievements in the field of public effectiveness in sociology.
