Prof. Dr. Christiane Funken

Prof. Dr. Christiane Funken (*1953 in Rheinland) is a sociologist and head of the Department for Communication and Media Research as well as Sociology of Gender at the TU BERLIN.

Christiane Funken earned her doctorate degree in criminal sociology studies at the RWTH Aachen in1989. In 1991 she received an appointment at the University of Freiburg and created the Institute for Computer Sciences and Society. In 1994 she headed Division 1 at the Institute of Computer Sciences and Society. In 1996 she also taught classes at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich. She earned her post-doctorate degree in 1998 at the Faculty of Philosophy at RWTH Aachen with an empirical, interdisciplinary study on engineering genesis. She was a (C2) professor at the University of Freiburg from 1998 to 2002 and a guest professor for a year at the TU Vienna in 2002 as well as at the TU Berlin. Since 2002 she is head of the field she created that focuses on communication, media sociology, network research and gender studies.

Her research and teaching focus primarily on the spectrum of media and media impact research, (media) cooperation / communication / professional careers at companies as well as structures and cultures at SME networks and network management. All of her research includes real-world issues which allow her to bring in her own personal professional experiences and gender-specific questions.

Prof. Funken has made a name for herself as an expert in future communications processes, professional careers at companies, changes in the working world and innovative network management through her corresponding research, scientific publications, presentations and lectures and her many years of professional experience in the field of consulting.
