Full-Professor in Theoretical Physics with a focus on Modeling and Simulation of Nanostructures

Announcement of a Faculty Opening at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences – Professor in Theoretical Physics – (permanent employment contract in compliance with the Austrian Universities Act of 2002, §94 para. 2 subpara. 1 UG 2002)

In accordance with § 98 of the Universities Act, the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the Johannes Kepler University Linz invites applications for a tenured position of

Full-Professor in Theoretical Physics with a focus on Modeling and Simulation of Nanostructures

to begin immediately. An evaluation will follow after a four-year period.

We are looking for an outstanding scientist in the field of theoretical condensed matter physics who is investigating electronic, magnetic and optical properties of nanostructures, taking into account many particle quantum effects. The research should focus on the correlation of microscopic structures with their functional properties. Further, it should involve the development of strategies for the design of materials with certain properties, such as metallic and semiconducting hetero- and nanostructures in the bulk and on surfaces. Experience in multiscaling approaches that combine theories of different complexity is desired. Examples of such theories are ab-initio theory for the electronic structure, Maxwell-theory for the propagation of electromagnetic fields and density matrix theory for the light-matter and electron-phonon interaction.

In addition to having an outstanding expertise in fundamental research the new professor should strengthen and expand the focus at the Physics Department in Linz and participate in the NanoScience and -Technology excellence program of the Faculty of Technical and Natural Sciences. Commitment to collaborations with national and international research institutions and external fund raising are expected.

Applicants are required to teach the full range of undergraduate and graduate courses in theoretical physics in both German and English language, and to participate in the administration of the University.

Applicants should hold a ‘Habilitation’ degree in theoretical physics, or an equivalent scientific qualification.

A salary above the minimum amount as stated in the collective agreement will be voluntarily offered. Depending on the current position (present salary) the annual gross salary will be between € 80,000 to € 100,000 (minimum salary as stated in the collective agreement plus voluntary additional payments).

JKU wishes to increase the proportion of female faculty and, for this reason, especially welcomes applications from women. If applicants are equally qualified, women will be given preference for this assignment. The university welcomes applications from qualified applicants with physical disabilities. These applications will be given special consideration.
Those interested in the position are requested to send in their complete application in adherence to the stated criteria in the job profile, together with the requested documentation and the short application sheet to the Rector of the Johannes Kepler University Linz (bewerbung@jku.at) before 6 March 2015. If documents cannot be sent in electronic format, they are to be sent in original with quintuplet copy and should arrive in the Rector’s office no later than one week after the end of the application deadline.
