Since the beginning, the JKU's focus and direction have been characterized by strong support from the local business community and society. After obtaining an academic degree, the next step for some is to put theory into practice and create a start-up company.
Out of the numerous companies started by JKU students, alumni and employees, we have created a small section with information about a select few spin-off companies.
During the past few years, support services for budding entrepreneurs have increased tenfold and include targeted consulting services as well as support for business start-ups in the field of science. Events range from the "Grundercafé" event organized by the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Organizational Development to taking advantage of the "tech2b" start-package created for hi-tech entrepreneurs.
The StartUp Center at the Institute of Entrepreneurship and Organizational Development (IUG) provides services for students, alumni, and JKU employees who wish to start their own business. The Center facilitates contact to numerous basic funding institutions in Austria and Upper Austria.
"akostart" is Austria's first inter-university network for academic start-up and spin-off companies. The organizing agencies include the JKU, the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, and the University of Art and Design Linz. Akostart aims to provide support services to increase academic entrepreneurship, form inter-university start-up teams, thus increasing the long-term value in Upper Austria. A special service offered by akostart is the Co-working Area which provides working space, networking opportunities, and events focusing on entrepreneurship and self-employment.
The JKU has been involved with the Upper Austrian "Hightech Inkubator tech2b" since 2003. University employees and alumni involved in areas of hi-tech and planning to start a business can contact tech2b for support, including consultation advice, financial advice, infrastructure and networking.
