Knowledge Transfer Centres (WTZ)

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research, and Economy has created a modular knowledge transfer program "Knowledge Transfer Centers and IPR Utlilization" to best transfer scientific knowledge into commercial practicend thus generate added value in Austria.

The program consists of three modules:
• Module 1a: Regional Knowledge Transfer Centers
• Module 1b: Thematic Knowledge Transfer Center in the field of Life Sciences
• Module 2: Patent Funding
• Module 3 Proof of Concept - Funding for Prototypes

Module 1a consists of three regional Knowledge Transfer Centers (WTZ):
WTZ East: Vienna, Lower Austria
WTZ South: Styria, Carinthia
WTZ West: Tyrol, Salzburg, Upper Austria

A regional Knowledge Transfer Center is a group of state universities (in accordance to the 2002 Universities Act) in regional proximity to one another which have joined together on the basis of a consortium contract to professionalize the management of intellectual property and enhance synergies to use and intensify cooperation with the business community.

WTZ West has the following partners:
University of Innsbruck (lead coordinator)
Medical University of Innsbruck
University of Salzburg
Mozarteum Salzburg
University of Linz
University of Art & Design Linz

As part of the program, each year the consortial partner of a center must submit a so-called joint cooperation project (1 year duration). The projects must be allocated to certain thematic areas of focus.

WTZ-West has decided to locate its projects in particularly IPR relevant subject areas:
• Physical Science (Lead: JKU)
• Biomedical Sciences (Lead: Medical University of Innsbruck)
• Information Technology (Lead: University of Innsbruck)
• GSK, EEK and Art (Lead: University of Art & Design Linz)
• Accompanying Measures and Awareness (Lead: University of Salzburg)

As part of the projects, so-called associated partners of beneficiary third-parties can receive funding. WTZ-West is currently working with the following associated partners:
Management Center Innsbruck (MCI)
Center for Academic Spin-Offs Tyrol (CAST)
