The Global Environmental Sustainability Project

Beschreibung: European Union/Commonwealth of Australia Collaboration

Project Description:

The responsible and sustainable stewardship of our shared environment is one of the most pressing global issues of our time. The adage "act locally, think globally" applies particularly to this project. Over the years, we have seen the development of inter-jurisdictional relationships at the governmental and NGO level. This project aims to put often expressed goals of international co-operation in environmental sustainability in to practice and enhance the personal and professional development as well as mobility of both students and staff at these institutions.

The Global Environment Sustainability Project is a unique 3-year mobility project with partners in the UK, Austria, Poland, Denmark and Australia. The sustainable management of the environment is a crucial issue for future generations. Whilst there are national and international consortia focusing on collaborative research in this area, there are no existing goal (i.e. trans-continental) programmes that provide for the movement of students between institutions. The project was launched in November 2010 and will be concluded in October 2013.
The project will provide opportunities for 32 EU students to study sustainability issues in Australia for one semester, and 30 Australian students to study sustainability issues in EU for one semester. In order to ensure the widest possible participation, the project is open to students at undergraduate levels (Bachelors), and participants are able to choose amongst all relevant courses at the respective institutions.

The project also provides for the exchange of up to 16 members of EU faculty to spend a period of two weeks undertaking research in Australia and for 15 members of the Australian faculty to visit the EU institutions.

The project will enable future specialists and current academics in this discipline to share best practice in education and research, gain experience in environmental management in a different geographical spectrum and confront the future challenges of sustainabilty in an increasingly complex international environment that fosters global collaboraition. The stark needs and differences in environmental management between Europe and Australia are reflected in the courses taught at the European and Australian institutions. The overarching theme of the project is, however, the global imperative of the sustainable management of our environment. By taking part in this project, students will gain invaluable insight in to additional aspects of environmental sustainability they would not have been able to learn by staying on one continent.

Student and staff exchange will commence in the 2011/2012 academic year.
