Who is Exempt from Tuition Fees?

In general, all students at all Austrian universities are subject to paying tuition fees. Exemptions include students who are generally allowed to waive fees or are exempt for a limited time period.


Exempt for a Limited Time Period:

The following students enrolled in a degree-seeking program are exempt from tuition fees during the regular study period given to earn a Diploma degree, Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate Degree Program, plus two semesters (tuition-free period)

  • 1. Austrian citizens,
  • 2. EU citizens,
  • 3. EEA citizens (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein),
  • 4. Nationals of the Swiss Confederation,
  • 5. Convention refugees (also from another EU country),
  • 6. Subsidary beneficiaries of protection,
  • 7. Third-country nationals who have been granted one of the following residence permits: "Daueraufenthalt - EG" or "Daueraufenthalt - EU" issued by the responsible Austrian authority, "Daueraufenthalt - EG" or "Daueraufenthalt - EU" issued by the responsible authority of a another member country, a residence permit for Austria ("Daueraufenthaltskarte") issued by the responsible Austrian authority,
  • 8. Turkish nationals on the basis of the EEC-Turkey Association Agreement, providing he/she duly lives with parents who are Turkish nationals and the parents are or were legally employed in Austria,
  • 9. Students to whom the group regulation applies
  • 10. Students who have another Austrian residence permit than "Aufenthaltsbewilligung Studierende"

NOTE! The mentioned residence permit (Pts. 5-10) must be presented at the Admissions Office within the admissions period in person or sent per e-mail to: studienbeitrag(/\t)jku.at !
Students must still pay the Austrian Student Union fee even during the tuition exempt period. Students who exceed the tuition exempt period will be subject to paying the tuition fees and the Austrian Student Union fee.


General Exemption:

Students enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the JKU who are citizens of one of the countries in Appendix 3 of § 3a of the Regulations for Tuition Fees 2004 are generally exempt from paying tuition fees. You only have to pay theAustrian Student Union fee of € 19.20 each semester.

Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo - Democratic Republic, Djibouti, Equadorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kambodscha, Kap Verde, Kiribati, Komoren, Laos - People's Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauretania, Mozambik, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Samoa, São Tomé and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Yemen and Zambia.


Other Countries:

If you do not hold EU or EEA citizenship or a resident permit from one of the countries listed, you will be subject to paying tuition fees in the amount of €745.92 (including the Austrian Student Union fee) starting the first semester!
