Supplementary Examinations and Preparation Courses


How do I sign up for a supplementary examination?

In order to sign up for a supplementary examination, you must be enrolled at the JKU as an external (=außerordentliche/r) student. To enroll as an external student, please go to the Admissions Office (see: www.jku.at/zus) during the corresponding enrollment period (see: www.jku.at/termine) and show your letter of admission and a valid passport.

You must register for the supplementary examination(s) at the Dept. of Examination and Recognition Services (www.jku.at/pas) no later than 1 week before the designated date in person or by e-mail.


When do supplementary examinations take place?

Supplementary examinations in German, Mathematics, and History take place up to three times per semester. The exact examination dates are available at the the Department of Examination and Recognition Services before the beginning of the semester. The dates for supplementary examinations in Chemistry and Physics must be organized directly with the examiner.

Additional sign-ups for the examination must then be carried out at the Department of Examination and Recognition Services.

The examinations are free of charge and can be repeated as often as required.


What language are the supplementary examinations held in?

Supplementary examinations in German and Physics will be held in German. By student request, supplementary examinations in Chemistry, History, and Mathematics can be held in either German or English. Please consult with the examiner in advance.


What are preparation courses for the supplementary examinations?

Preparation courses for the supplementary examinations are courses designed to prepare the applicant to take the required supplementary examination. There are no preparation courses offered for Chemistry, History, or Physics. However, learning materials are available for independent study.


How do I sign up to take a preparation course?

In order to sign up for a supplementary examination, you must be enroilled at the JKU as an external (=außerordentliche/r) student. To enroll as an external student, please go to the Admissions Office (see: www.jku.at/zus) during the corresponding enrollment period (see: www.jku.at/termine) and show your letter of admission and a valid passport.

Register for the course(s) via the Kepler University Study Support System (KUSSS) at: www.jku.at/kusss. Course registration takes place each semester before the semester begins during the designated dates (www.jku.at/termine).


What are the fees and costs to take supplementary examinations/preparation courses?

There are no costs or fees to take the examination. Some of the preparation courses are subject to fees. Detailed information is available in the section for each individual subject examination.

Please note that you must pay the tuition fees and the Austrian Student Union fee. Failure to pay tuition fees and the Austrian Student Union fee on time will result in being disenrolled and the JKU cannot issue transcripts or certificates for any courses and examinations you have taken. Proof of having taken examinations is required for different purposes, such as extending a student visa.
