Why Study at the JKU?

The International Office Team

The International Office is responsible for the coordination and administration of international student exchange programs. Our team is available to facilitate all of the preparations necessary for your stay abroad, such as the application procedure, finding accommodations, organizing a pre-semester program and answering any and all questions and concerns you may have!

REFI, JKU Students Committed to Assisting Exchange Students

You will most certainly become well acquainted with REFI during your stay at JKU! REFI is a part of the Austrian Student Union committed to ensuring visiting exchange students enjoy their stay in Linz. The team organizes regular events such as a welcome party, a night at the casino, and their now popular 'Stammtische' (a bi-weekly get-together where international students introduce food, drinks, music and games from their respective home countries) and excursions in and around Austria (as well as to Budapest and Prague). More information

Mentors

As an international student, you will be assigned an Austrian student from the JKU to mentor and assist you upon arrival and during your stay here. Mentors will pick you up from the airport or train station, assist you with university enrollment procedures as well as introduce you to activities in Linz and Austrian student life. More information

Pre-Semester Program

Students and staff at the JKU are committed to ensuring a smooth transition to student life in Austria by providing an exciting and informative orientation program.
Prior to the beginning of each semester, the university offers intensive German language courses. In small classes, students attend German lessons designed for beginners as well as for students with intermediate and advanced levels of German. JKU also offers all exchange students a complementary 'Cultural Sensitivity' program to assist with cultural immersion.
In addition, the International Office organizes a campus tour, a guided city tour of Linz and excursions to local places of interest to familiarize incoming students with the local area. More Information

Student Life on Campus

The JKU campus bustles with student activity! Between numerous campus cafés such as Chat or Sassi, the LUI pub, university cafeterias, and regularly held parties and events in and around campus, there is no lack of opportunity to make new friends! Green grassy areas invite students to spend their free time between lectures outdoors. And the best feature is: the campus is just a short tram ride away from the city center!

Sports at JKU

While university studies are important, JKU offers more than just academic education! Each semester, the University Sports Institute (USI) offers a variety of classes in aerobics, exercising, stretching, jazz-dance, basketball, football (soccer), handball, volleyball, bowling, table tennis, badminton, tennis, swimming, fencing, yoga, climbing, judo, tae-kwo-do, aikido and much more! Fees for each class range from just 10 EUR to EUR 20 per semester. More Information

JKU Location and Students Residence Halls

The JKU campus and a number of student dormitories are located only 20 minutes from the center of Linz by tram. The campus and dormitories are easily accessible by public transportation. The surrounding area is green and idyllic, only a few minutes away from Lake Plesching. During the warmer months, many students take advantage of the proximity to the lake to swim, relax, play some beach volleyball or just tan and enjoy warm sunny days. The Danube River is close by and long, inviting, and winding paths along the river banks are perfect for long walks, jogging or cycling.

Student Accommodation

The International Office assists exchange students by arranging accommodations at local student dormitories, allowing international students to become better acquainted with Austrian students. Each student dormitory provides modern, fully equipped and furnished double and single occupancy rooms complete with telephone and Internet access. Students can choose between various student dormitories located in close proximity to campus. More Information
