Prospective applicants applying to enroll in an academic degree program held entirely in German are required to provide proof of sufficient language skills in German. Proof of successfully passing the B2+ level is considered sufficient (B2+ lies between levels B2 and C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

The following German examinations will be accepted as a pre-requisite for enrollment to a degree-seeking program:

  • Supplementary Examination in German at the Johannes Kepler University (level B2+)
  • Goethe Institute, level B2 (with the grade "Gut" or "Sehr Gut")
  • ÖSD Certificate B2 ("Gut" or "Sehr Gut")

The Language Certificates may be no older than 2 years at the time of application.

Before attempting to take the "Ergänzungsprüfung Deutsch", you can attend German language courses at the Johannes Kepler University by enrolling under the status of "außerordentliche/r Studierende/r". Click here for information regarding tuition fees. Please note that it takes an average of approximately four to five semesters to successfully complete the "Ergänzungsprüfung Deutsch".

Prospective applicants applying for an academic degree program held entirely in English are not required to show proof of German language skills.

Please note that German courses are subject to fees. See: Center for Business Languages and Cultural Communication for more information.

Fast Track for Students Accepted to a Master’s Degree Program

The Johannes Kepler University offers an intensive German immersion course for international students who have already been accepted to a Master’s Degree Program.

The two-semester "German Immersion" course (30 ECTS credits per semester) concludes at the B2+ level and is considered equivalent to the "Ergänzungsprüfung Deutsch". Fees are € 250 per semester.

The course offers international students who have been accepted to a Master’s Degree Program an opportunity

  1. to begin a German-language Master's degree program at the JKU more quickly and
  2. improve professional prospects in Upper Austria after completing a Master’s degree program.

If there are open spots available in these courses, international students who have been already accepted to a Bachelor’s / Diploma degree program may also enroll in the German Immersion Course.
