University Courses

1. Language of Instruction/English Courses

The primary language of instruction at the JKU is mainly German. However, each semester the university offers over 300 university courses in English.

Please note that the final listing of university courses at JKU is available only a few weeks before the relevant semester begins at http://kusss.jku.at/. However, in order to select your courses for the upcoming semester, please search the course selection from the previous year as a guideline (i.e., courses from 2009). An overview of the courses offered at the JKU can be viewed in chart format for the following areas:

2. Course Catalog

Intensive German Language Courses

Prior to the beginning of each semester, JKU offers intensive German language courses (beginning, lower intermediate and advanced levels) for exchange students. In the Winter Semester, the course is offered for three weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. In the Summer Semester the course is held two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. Students who attend each class meeting and pass the final exam can earn ECTS credits. The three-week course held before the beginning of the Winter Semester is 3 ECTS credits. The two-week course held prior to the Summer Semester is 2 ECTS credits. The course is free of charge.

4. Course Types

Most courses are conducted in units of two semester hours per week (90 minutes). The semester is comprised of 15 weeks. Due to organizational reasons or the nature of the course material, some courses will be held in block form (for example, 3 hours every two weeks or intensive weekends).

These are the most common types of courses:
