Beschreibung: Fields of research

The Institute for Management Control and Consulting focuses on the following fields of research:

  • Although 40-70% of all enterprises in Austria are family firms, too little research has concentrated on the unique structure and organization of these companies. Hence, the Institute for Management Control and Consulting puts an emphasis of their research on “Management control in family firms”. In detail, this field of research focuses on the specific formulation of enterprise goals and strategies, management and corporate culture, as well as the organization of family firms. To comprehensively understand this topic through the lens of financial corporate information, the Institute for Management Control and Consulting closely works together with other institutes at the Johannes Kepler University Linz. • With regards to an increasingly complex and dynamic business environment another field of research is “Management control in internationally operating enterprises”. A well-established management control department is essential for guaranteeing an efficient supply of information and proper coordination of management. Therefore, both fundamentals of management control in international enterprises are examined, such as: profit planning and the evaluation of foreign subsidiaries, and the impact of cultural factors on management control. • With regard to the Austrian economic structure which is characterized by small and medium sized enterprises, research on SME in theory and practice is interesting. Corporate environment has changed considerably during the last several years, and decades, leading to an internationalization of the markets, an increased corporate environment dynamic, higher pressure for innovation, and an increased complexity of problems. Thus, large companies are more and more interested in qualitative management control. Moreover, small and medium sized enterprises must deal with discontinuities and quick amendments of their business environment. Consequently, their improvised and intuitive management practices are reaching their limit, or fail totally. The research field “Management control in small and medium sized enterprises” focuses on various aspects of this topic – for example management control in micro and small enterprises, external management control in SMEs etc. For further information please click hier.
  • In recent times the business ethics of corporations, big and small, have been called into question; therefore, researchers from the Institute of Management Control and Consulting place a research focus on “Business Economics and Ethics”. Of central interest is whether or not business ethics is a topic pertinent to our current time, or is the study, and teaching, of this topic something that should be implemented in curriculum moving forward? Furthermore, the relationship of Ethics and management control is discussed. For further information please click here.
  • With regard to a global relevance of corporate insolvencies we put an emphasis on research of “crisis management – redevelopment – insolvency”. For many years the Institute for Management Control and Consulting has dealt with this topic from a business standpoint. It has been the only institute of its kind in Austria. In addition to research on this topic in Austria, the current economic situation in Anglo-American countries will be analyzed and compared to the situation in Austria.
