Recent Activities

2nd-7th July 2017: 16th European Polymer Conference, Lyon, France
Gunnar and Andreas attended the 16th EPF in Lyon, France from 2nd–7th July. Both presented their ongoing work: Gunnar had a talk and Andreas presented a poster.
Approximately 950 experts in varying fields of polymer chemistry had more than 320 oral presentations and almost 500 poster presentations. One of the highlights was the inspiring lecture on Dynamers (adaptive dynamic polymers) held by Nobel laureate Jean Marie Lehn. The conference was most definitely a very memorable event. Besides the scientific program: Lyon is a city worth visiting! Full of architectural gems, relaxed people and good food!

12-16th June 2017: BYPoS 2017, Kaluza, Slovakia
Gerold, Regina and Sara visited the 7th BYPoS-Bratislava Young Polymer Scientist Workshop 2017 from 12th-16th June in Kaluza at the lake Zemplinska Sirava, Slovakia. About 30 participants from 8 different countries had the opportunity to communicate the latest exciting developments and results in the dynamic field of macromolecular chemistry. In addition, five invited speakers presented their current research. Beside the scientifically stimulating meetings and the excited discussions, a trip to the natural beauty – Morske oko and a wine tasting in Pivnica Orechova was organized. This was a good chance for networking and having a lot of fun.
Therefore, we want to thank the organizer committee, especially Alena and Silvia, for the good time in Slovakia.

11-14th June 2017: ISPAC 2017, Linz, Austria
We had the pleasure to host the 30th International Symposium on Polymer Analysis and Characterization (ISPAC) from June 11th -14th. Starting on Sunday with a workshop on rheology, dielectric spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, cellulose analysis and analysis of molar masses and branching. During the three day conference 147 participants from 26 countries enjoyed 16 plenary talks, 54 oral and 20 poster presentations in our new representation rooms at the JKU campus.
We hope to see many of them again when ISPAC 2018 is held in Bethesda, Maryland, USA.

8-10th June 2017: MCM´17, Rom, Italy
Paul Aigner attended the 3rd World Congress on Mechanical, Chemical, and Material Engineering, which took place in Rome, Italy. Rome with its great historical background provided a wonderful setting for the conference. Although the weather was very nice, there was lively interest in the many interesting lectures that led to numerous discussions about different engineering topics. The conference, which took place at the Barceló Aran Mantegnalo, offered the opportunity to engage in scientific exchange as well as to capture the pleasant atmosphere of Rome.

6-9th June 2017: INCOREP 2017, Gleen/Maastricht, Netherlands
Professor Paulik and Theresia Hackl attended the 6th “International Conference on the Reaction Engineering of Polyolefins” (INCOREP). Many well-known scientists in the field of Polyolefin science participated the conference, which was held at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. Between lots of very high-quality contributions there was good opportunity to exchange with other researchers in a pleasant atmosphere. Despite the changing weather, which was an alternating mixture of sun, rain and wind we were able to walk around in Maastricht and enjoy the beautiful and charming city.
Thanks to the organizer for the well-planned, informative, inspiring and exciting week!

16-19th May 2017: ISGC 2017, LaRochelle, France
From 16th - 19th our colleague Christine Klein attended "The International Symposium on Green Chemistry" - ISGC - in La Rochelle, France.
She presented a flash communication with the title "Halophiles as suitable producers of polyhydroxyalkanoates out of components from sulfite spent liquor". The conference program was very dense and more than 600 researcher were joining it.
La Rochelle is a very nice port city in the west of France. Due to its geographic location on the Atlantic Ocean it's an important shipping, commercial and touristic center.

2nd of May 2017: Glassblowing, Mausz Günther
Two of our fellow PhD students had the possibility to enhance their knowledge in a special field of „chemistry“– the craftsmanship of glass blowing. Therefore, Regina and Sara visit the atelier of Günther Mausz in Urfahr weekly. Mister Mausz teaches them several important techniques starting with the preparation of a handle (which is by far the most important task to master =) ), bending angles and further reaching out to blow symmetrical balls. The aim of this workshop is to produce and prepare laboratory glassware independently.
Apart from some minor brandings and lacerations, the work with Günther is a lot of fun and the created glass equipment is actually not so bad (depends on practice).

30th of January 2017: Excursion to the OMV refinery, Vienna-Schwechat, Austria
Professor Paulik, with a group of 30 students, visited the production site and the laboratories of OMV in Schwechat. The tour was guided by DI Dr. Paul Schöffl, a former PhD Student here at the CTO institute. Our collegue arranged a nice tour and gave interesting insight on what they are doing: OMV produces far more than just various types of fuel and oil, (not only) for industrial partners, it covers all kinds of speciality products as well.

18th January 2017: Brewing and Pressing Oil
Two of our fellow PhD students were invited to talk about their hobbies: brewing beer and extracting valuable oils from different kinds of seeds. Andreas Kreuzer is not only a passionate beer drinker, but together with a friend, Gottfried Aufischer, they have also crafted 50 different kinds and beer variations until today. In his talk he shared his expertise about their home-brewery, the troubles starting and the chemistry of brewing.
Markus Nadlinger, himself both a chemist and "hobby-farmer", talked about how to obtain oil from oilseeds, the cultivation of oil-plants, as well as other specialities, as liquors and aromatized oils.
The audience of the well attended lecture, organized in the context of the young chemists lectures from GÖCH, had then the chance to try the different products of Andreas and Markus. Thank you for sharing.

20th December 2016, Christmas Staff Party
On 15th of October we were invited to the "Stadtliebe" in Linz for our office christmas party. Prior to that we met on the christmas market for mulled whine and punch. From there we made our way to the restaurant and enjoyed menu variations for meat, fish or vegetarian gourmets, with lots of laughters and drinks. It was a comforting evening that many prolonged by a visit in the casino followed by a "bar rally" in Linz until dawn.
Our thanks go to Professor Paulik for this nice evening, btw. without any affairs or blackouts, what a pity ;).

12th December 2016, K-Fair Düsseldorf
Already in October this year, JKU was represented at the K 2016 in Düsseldorf, the World's No. I Trade Fair for Plastics and Rubber, with an exhibition booth of its own, the so called JKU Plastics Surprise Egg, which is a digital interactive information tool.
Plastic Europe had a “Special Show”, which was called “Plastic shape the future” and two JKU PhD Students had a Speed-Talk. One of these two was our college Sandra Neuhofer, her talk titled:" Anti-Aging for Polymers - A Contribution to Resource Efficiency".
Congratulations to this contribution and thank you everyone for the participation in the K-fair team.

27-28th October, 2016: DIMAP M12 Meeting in Karlsruhe
Professor Paulik and Andreas Kreuzer attend the M12 Meeting in Karlsruhe, which was hosted by the Karlsruher Intitut für Technologie (KIT). The discussions evolved around the progress made in the work packages and the future outline of the project. The KIT also organized a very interesting lab tour as well as a quite unique dinner event in a restaurant: Die Alte Brauerei.
Thank you for that! We look forward to the project meeting in month 18, which will take place in Brussels.
