GreenSi EC FP7 project
The Green Si project (the acronym stands for "Generate Renewable Energy Efficiently using Nanofabricated Silicon") aims at the development of improved thermoelectric devices to harvest waste heat and convert it into electricity. The material development focuses on Si-based heterostructures with a high electronic, but a low thermal conductivity. For this purpose, multilayers and nanostructures with tailored photonic properties are developed, to reduce the photonic contribution to heat transport, while keeping the electrical conductivity high, and hence increase the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT.
The project includes partners from University of Glasgow, United Kindom (coordinator, design and fabriaction of thermoelectric devices), L-NESS, Politecnico di Milano, Como, Italy (growth of SiGe multilayers as the basic material), Institute for Semiconductor and Solid State Physics, Universität Linz, Austria (structural characterization of multilayers and nanostructures using x-rays), and Electron Microscopy, ETH Zürich, Switzerland (electron microscopy investigations), and started in 2010.
