Spot-profile analysis low-energy electron diffraction (SPA-LEED)
This UHV system contains a device for Spot Profile Analysis Low Energy Electron Diffraction (SPALEED), a cylindrical mirror analyser for Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) and a Quadrupole Mass Analyser (QMA). Its compact design allows an easy transport of the whole chamber without breaking UHV, e.g., to perform experiments at the Applied Physics Institute on the Laser-induced damage on single crystalline surfaces. In this case, SPA-LEED and Reflectance Difference Spectroscopy (RDS) measurements were performed during sputtering of the sample with argon ions and/or irradiation with laser light . The sample holder is equipped with a combination of electron bombardment heating and liquid nitrogen cooling so that the sample temperature can be varied between 110 K and 1100 K.
Recent experiments were concerned with the oxygen and Ag induced restructuring of copper surfaces, where the change in morphology and surface facetting can be traced with high precision by quantitative analysis of the electron diffraction patterns [2,3].
