20th Anniversary Integriert Studieren
20 years ago the JKU took on the challenge to professionally support students with disabilities by founding the Institute of Integrated Studies. Across multiple stages of development (Pilot Project, Compartment, Interuniversity Institute, Institute) it was possible to integrate people with a disability at University. Just like that the University transformed into an example and a driving force of the social transition to the integration of people with disabilities.
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) did play and are still playing a key role in that process. They were advancing in all areas of life in the last few decades and are therefore providing the man-machine interface. These interfaces are made handicapped accessible with Assistive Technologies (AT) which can also be operated by people with disabilities and are therefore the universal gateway to information society.
With ICT and AT handicapped acccessibility and Integration can be transferred into all areas of life.
The JKU is - with the Institute Integriert Studieren - a "Best Practice" example and has made ICT, AT and handicapped accessibility to their main research. These developments were recognized at a function on 11. July 2011.
