Project description
OFDM is currently the dominating technique in the wired, wireless and optical communications field. One of the drawbacks of the classical OFDM concepts is that they still sacrifice up to 20 % of the transmit energy and data rate only to cope with the effects of multipath propagation. Unique Word OFDM is a novel signaling scheme that promises to overcome this flaw. The Unique Word offers improvements in synchronization and estimation tasks that are in part due to non-idealities in analogue hardware. Additionally, research results demonstrate that UW-OFDM is able to reach a specified performance with significantly reduced transmit power compared to signaling concepts used in state-of-the-art communication systems nowadays; an aspect which is crucial for battery-driven devices. Especially for wireless communications this technique shows superior spectral properties by suppressing out-of-band emissions substantially, thus enabling to serve more users by deploying user channels closer together. Economically speaking, this feature is important for mobile network operators, as an efficient use of the available bandwidth is a key aspect. (FoDok)
