I/Q mismatch compensation

Description
The mismatches in the analog circuitry of I/Q-modulator/demodulator-based transmitters and receivers introduce distortions, which result in an increased bit error rate in the detector. Due to the high bandwidth of current mobile communication systems, these distortions appear to be frequency dependent. The identification and compensation of the I/Q mismatch can be performed in the digital domain in the receiver. However, we want to have a computationally simple solution, which should be independent from the use of any pilot symbols to be standard-agnostic. Our approach for such a blind method for I/Q mismatch compensation is based on a statistical property called “properness”, which most digitally modulated signals fulfill. We have developed a low-complexity solution, which requires just a real-valued filter and two multiplications for I/Q mismatch compensation. Thus it is well suited for application in mobile devices with limited computational resources.
