Theoretical Sociology and Social Analyses
In our analyses of contemporary societies, we apply both classical and contemporary sociological theory. Reflecting the epistemological background of these theories, we integrate a wide range of traditional schools of thought and current sociological approaches in order to provide forms of social analysis that are in keeping with our times. For us, a pluralism of theory means integrating different approaches while recognizing and evaluating their epistemological meaning and relevance. By means of research in a wide variety of fields we contribute to further developing social theory.

Methodology and Methods
A critical and reflexive way of dealing with methods is key to our approach. Adopting a subject oriented approach, we use both qualitative and quantitative methods. In times of social transformation, qualitative research strategies can be particularly helpful in creating new knowledge because they can contribute to reconstructing hidden – not clearly visible – logics of action. Analyses based on quantitative methods, on the other hand, provide broad views of people’s attitudes and experiences, and social phenomena.

Public Sociology
For the past twenty years, we have seen the stable structures of industrial society that evolved after 1945 slowly erode; the world is turning into an ever more unfamiliar place for us. Against this backdrop, the field of Public Sociology is taking on increasing importance as an area of work next to traditional fields, such as applied or fundamental social research. Public Sociology aims to address a non-academic public in order to promote public discourse on social values.
