The course covers topics such as the foundations of international business and connected emerging issues such as the climate crisis and sustainability. Upon completion of the course students will be able to understand which interdependent factors influence decision making in an international context by including the economic, political/legal, cultural, institutional and monetary/fiscal environments. They will have extensive knowledge of working in an international, complex and dynamic business environment, and can make use of introduced analysis tools needed to deal with complex problems and decisions in international business and management.

This course is an introductory course covering basic knowledge of accounting/double-entry bookkeeping and the effects of corporate actions on a firm’s financial statements. Additionally, the course provides further insights into the forthcoming digitalization impact on the accounting process and the future productivity benefits, given the implementation costs of electronic filing and digital reporting.

Additionally, the course introduces selected International Financial Accounting Standards (IFRS) as required accounting rules for listed entities in the European Union and highlights the underlying fundamental principles of (consolidated) financial statements prepared according to IFRS. Emphasis is placed on understanding the significant differences between IFRS and US-Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

This course intends to sensitize students to the issues and challenges involved in cross-cultural (business) encounters, e.g. interactions between managers and subordinates, or between colleagues or business partners of different cultural backgrounds. This course aims to equip students with the essential entrepreneurial and leadership skills needed to succeed in today's dynamic and increasingly entrepreneurial business environment. This course aims to combine theoretical and practical insights into how companies manage international expansion and maintain international operations. Students are taught to explain the basic principles of international strategy formulation and implementation, and describe different modes of international expansion and the factors influencing them. This is an introductory course that deals with fundamental theories and models in strategic and international management, and important management tools and methods. Students deal with current issues and challenges in strategic and international management, including cultural aspects. Students are taught how to tackle the operational aspects of project management in global virtual teams. They learn the foundations of management in a virtual environment and practice simulations, as well as familiarizing themselves with creating a virtual laboratory for experimenting and enhancing project skills. Teamwork and collaboration in a group setting are strongly emphasized as they provide the foundation for the course setting! The course has an online / virtual component, yet attendance on-campus may be required.

The module consists of a "KS" and "IK" type course. It is recommended to enroll in and attend both courses in the same semester!

In the module students become familiar with the concepts, models and methods of production and supply chain planning, design and control. They are able to formulate strategic, tactical and operational supply chain planning problems in a structured manner, identify and apply suitable modeling approaches and solution procedures, and check the plausibility of the results obtained and interpret them. Students use software (e.g. Excel Solver) to solve the optimization problems covered on small and medium-sized data sets and check and interpret the results obtained.

In this course students gain knowledge of the basics of cost and management accounting. They know possible fields of application of the learned instruments in the context of a broad variety of business issues and their relevance in the context of organizational control as well as for the provision of information and decision-making support for management. This course provides an introduction to the financial management of enterprises and analysis of financial decisions made in a company. Students will acquire knowledge of the internal and external sources of financing and the process of raising capital for both private and public companies. They learn how to use project evaluation tools like NPV and IRR, and apply them to the evaluation of an investment opportunity. The students will get to know how to apply the basic tools of finance on investment and financing decisions.

In this course students gain knowledge of the consequences of business taxation in cross border cases and of methods for relief from double taxation. In this introductory course students will learn about which fundamental factors influence behavior in organizations and how learning and change processes can be designed and supported by leadership and HRM. They will examine processes of organizing from different perspectives and deal with leadership, change management and organizational learning to shape the development of organizations. This intensive course provides insights into the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) as the application of information technology, sensors and communication technology in transport applications. Factors like green public spaces, in coalition with high safety and security foster the investigation of transportation systems for a sustainable and environmental benefit. In this context, smart, connected mobility can reduce not only traffic congestion and carbon emissions but also enhance road safety- related issues. This course gives an overview of the impact of digital technologies on transportation to make better use of the city’s existing infrastructure, make transportation systems safer, efficient reliable and environmentally friendly.

In this course students gain a basic knowledge of research designs, the basic principles of research methodology and methods. They are able to distinguish between the key paradigms of social science research, decide on an appropriate research design for basic research questions and formulate them accordingly. The students know the basics necessary to understand the main ideas of published research material and the competences to read up on further research strategies and methods and make informed choices about how to approach specific problems they need to solve from a social scientific perspective.

In this course the participants learn about Management Control Systems (MCSs), especially how to use, design and evaluate MCSs and what are the different components of a MCSs in Profit- and Non-profit Organizations. Int his course students gain knowledge of the challenges evolving from digitalization, impacting on the individual and society. They are able to identify ways to tackle these challenges from a companies’ point of view. In this course students know and understand the concepts and challenges of sustainable development and organizational sustainability as well as their interrelationships. This seminar aims at providing insights into the field of simulation in transportation to perform experimental studies, testing of new technologies and demonstrate present and future scenarios. Microscopic traffic simulators allow comparison and testing of various existing or new street configurations or equipment. Therefore, they allow for deciding how street design arrangements or new technologies are seen and comprehended by the drivers, and which driving behaviour they produce. The acceptance of these arrangements by the users determine traffic safety. Traffic scenarios will be defined and tested within the seminar to obtain results that will be compiled in a scientific paper. The paper will be presented during the seminar. Summer Semester

The course aims at providing a basic understanding of the necessity of an independent audit and its role in the corporate governance discussion. It further focuses on the challenges in auditing financial statements in a multinational context, starting with the introduction of the risk-based audit approach and its limitations from a theoretical and practical perspective. It further gives an overview of relevant regulatory requirements on selected topics, e.g., independency, from a national and international perspective. Students will develop an understanding of the objectives and limitations of financial statements’ audits and will enhance their skills regarding professional skepticism and judgement.

The students are able to explain the basic structure, principles and traits of tax systems commonly found in most OECD member states. They have basic knowledge of the typically levied types of taxes in these states and are able to identify the corresponding taxable items and events on a general level. They can apply this knowledge to a business context and know which taxes generally affect business structures and processes, either financially or by forcing procedural obligations upon them. In turn, they can analyze how taxation might influence business decisions. Through that knowledge, students are aware of the general tax risks associated with entrepreneurial activity and the relations between taxation and accounting.

In this course students gain knowledge of the basic concepts of corporate governance and the theory of the firm. They are aware of the role of important governance characteristics (such as corporate ownership) and can evaluate how corporate governance affects managerial decisions and the financial performance of the corporation. In this course students handle topics such as, International hybrid work, e-internships, and intercultural collaborations of mixed teams which are now an integral part of work competencies in the global world. International collaboration and negotiation skills are therefore essential for managers in startups, small and medium businesses, corporations, governments, NGOs, and educational institutions. The course is practical and experiential. Teaching is implemented within a discovery-based learning/teaching methodology, focusing on the practical small teamwork project in class and individual and team reflection after the implementation of the hands-on tasks. This module consists of a "KS" and "IK" type course. 

Students master the fundamentals of econometrics. They are familiar with the most important concepts of mathematical statistics such as estimation and testing. They know the differences between different types of data and have experience in data collection and preparation. They understand empirical economic papers and can also evaluate their quality. They know the strengths and limitations of multiple regression analyses and can interpret estimation coefficients depending on different functional forms. They are able to independently conduct simple empirical analyses using business and economic data and to interpret the results. The students know the difference between descriptive and causal analysis. They have an overview of the possibilities of causal identification.

This module consists of a "KS" and "IK" type course. 

The course is a methodological course to analyze strategic behavior of agents. The course introduces basic concepts of non-cooperative game theory in combination with applications dealing with competition in oligopolistic markets, sequential bargaining, limit pricing, credence goods, political competition or cartels. In this course we will focus on decision making in economic and business settings. It is not recommended to attend the intensifying course (IK) only, without being familiar with the content of the course Game Theory (KS).

Summer Semester

This course provides students with a guide to the theory and practice of banking. Participants should gain insights into a wide range of bank activities and management operations, and develop skills to quantitatively assess, for example, bank risk and stability, competitive behavior and productive efficiency. In combination with other topics such as bank lending and regulation, students obtain a comprehensive understanding of the role of banks in the financial sector and in the general economy.

The course deals with the functionalities and the specialties of online marketplaces. In addition to an introduction to game theory and the associated economic competition models, simple basics of mechanism design are discussed. The theoretical and empirical features of e-commerce, auctions and exchanges are discussed (functionality, welfare implications, optimal strategic behavior, ...). The course also discusses how blockchains and cryptocurrencies work. The course is held in form of distance learning, the whole content of the course (videos, slides, additional material) is accessible via the JKU's Moodle system

This module consists of a "KS" and "IK" type course. 

The course's goal is to provide students with an understanding of advanced econometric models and to enable them to deal with empirical work in a critical manner. The course discusses in detail specification, identification, and estimation techniques. The methods taught will provide students with a clear idea on how to undertake their own empirical projects (e.g., Master's thesis) and on how to critically assess empirical research. Topics include: Instrumental variables (IV), Randomized controlled trials, Difference-in-differences method, Regression discontinuity method, Matching procedures.

Winter Semester

In this course students have competent knowledge of existing exact solution concepts used in logistics applications. They will know the modelling concepts of mixed integer programming. They will be able to design mixed integer programs for logistics applications on their own and to design, implement and test appropriate optimization techniques, interfacing with commercial solver tools. They will also know how to evaluate and validate the obtained results.

This module consists of a "VL" and "UE" type course. 

Students are able to use methods and tools to merge large amounts of data (Big Data), especially business and web data, in a data warehouse or data lake. The students master methods and tools for data analysis with data warehouses and data lakes, in particular OLAP languages. The students are familiar with the reference architecture of data warehouse and data lake systems and are proficient in planning, designing and implementing data warehouse and data lake systems, taking into account the volume, velocity and variety of the data to be analyzed. The course content is taught using blended learning methods, in particular flipped classroom, with interactive elements to consolidate knowledge.

Summer Semester

In  this course students have an in-depth knowledge of selected advanced topics in production, logistics and supply chain management. They are able to describe planning problems using appropriate models and they are able to select and apply appropriate concepts and (solution) approaches. Furthermore, students have in-depth knowledge in long-term tactical as well as short-term operational distribution planning, such as parcel delivery, service technician routing and scheduling, patient transport etc, and dispose of in-depth knowledge in modeling and solving strategic and operational decision problems with multiple objectives, e.g., facility location planning considering cost and CO2 emissions or distribution planning in a disaster relief context.

In this course students have a competent knowledge of existing heuristic and metaheuristic methods used in logistics applications. They know basic design concepts of heuristics and metaheuristics. They are able to design, implement and test simple heuristics and metaheuristics for planning problems on their own. Furthermore students know statistical methods for evaluation of heuristic and metaheuristic results. This module consists of a "VL" and "UE" type course. 

Students will be able to apply data mining methods to integrated and cleaned data sets of an organization, but also to process logs and unstructured data such as text data, in such a way that potentially new knowledge can be gained through pattern recognition. They are familiar with the phases of data mining, important application areas (problem types) and current developments in data, web as well as process mining. The students are familiar with the use of data mining tools.
