Even though many MNCs are investing in voluntary CSR measures, these measures are not sufficient to address complex problems such as modern slavery or environmental destruction. Using the example of the Bangladesh Accord for Fire and Building Safety and the ACT-initiative for living wages, the authors develop the idea of ‘market-protected spaces’ resulting from multi-level institutional work as a means of facilitating the prioritization of social and environmental issues in the context of the global economy. The Academy of Management Journal is the most important and impactful international journal for publishing empirical management research.
