New publication in the Academy of Management Journal

[Translate to Englisch:] Academy of Management

Together with Nora Lohmeyer (Radboud University) and Sarah Ashwin (London School of Economics), Elke Schüßler (Institute of Organization Science) published results of the "Garment Supply Chain Governance, opens an external URL in a new window, opens an external URL in a new window“ project in the renowned Academy of Management Journal. Based on an in depth analysis of CSR activities of multinational corporations (MNCs) in the global fashion industry, the article ’We Can’t Compete on Human Rights’: Creating Market-Protected Spaces to institutionalize the Emerging Logic of Responsible Management, opens an external URL in a new window, opens an external URL in a new window' argues that to address pressing social and ecological concerns in the global economy, boundaries to the market logic which dominates the field need to be set. Even though many MNCs are investing in voluntary CSR measures, these measures are not sufficient to address complex problems such as modern slavery or environmental destruction. Using the example of the Bangladesh Accord for Fire and Building Safety and the ACT-initiative for living wages, the authors develop the idea of ‘market-protected spaces’ resulting from multi-level institutional work as a means of facilitating the prioritization of social and environmental issues in the context of the global economy. The Academy of Management Journal is the most important and impactful international journal for publishing empirical management research.
