Machine Learning: Drone Crash Net.

The drone crash net located east of the Open Innovation Center parking lot stretches out several meters above the ground and was designed to protect "Machine Learning" students involved in conducting drone experiments!

Dr. David Schedl (Institute for Computer Graphics) explains: "The net has been set up to protect students (mostly volunteer students) conducting camera drone experiments from any crashing drones. The experiments are for a project in which we apply machine learning to find missing or injured person in forests. We do this by using temperature data from an infrared camera mounted on the drone and we have a special procedure to combine the images. The data used to evaluate our method is taken from a forest area. The campus footage serves as training data (without dense forest) for the algorithm. The idea was to record the data on campus so that test participants can access the experiment as easily as possible."
