Scholarships.

You can apply for the following scholarhips - regardless of citizenship - to take part in a study abroad program:

 

STUDY ALLOWANCE TO STUDY ABROAD (for students receiving a study allowance "Studienbeihilfe")

If you are receiving a government study allowance ("Studienbeihilfe"), you can apply to receive your study allowance abroad for a maximum of 20 months. Submit the application to the Austrian Study Grant Authority in Linz. You will need a copy of your official credit transfer approval.

If the amount of study allowance you receive to help you study abroad is lower than the Erasmus+ Scholarship or the JKU scholarship, you will get the difference under the Erasmus+ Scholarship or the JKU Exchange Scholarship (providing the funds are available).

ERASMUS+ Scholarship (for studies at universities in Europe)

Scholarships are between €400 - €500 a month depending on the country (amounts for 2018/2019):

JKU STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP (for studies at universities outside of Europe)

The JKU offers scholarships to study abroad in the following amounts (amounts for the academic year 2019/20) to students who do not receive a study allowance (and therefore no study allowance to study abroad) and no Erasmus+ scholarship:

SCHOLARSHIP FOR RESIDENTS OF UPPER AUSTRIA

If Upper Austria has been your official main residence for at least 1 year and you still need financial aid to help fund your studies abroad, you can also apply for a scholarship from the state of Upper Austria as part of the IPS (internationalization program for students). The amount is a max. of € 100 per month. In addition, you could receive a travel allowance for up to max. € 240 in Europe and a max. of € 480 outside of Europe.

FINANCIAL AID FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

Students who have special needs and/or disabilities (info sheet, application) and students who have children (info sheet, application) intending to study abroad as part of the ERASMUS+ program can apply for a special grant provided by the European Commission.


For other exchange programs, you can apply for additional financial aid from the JKU in your scholarship application.

FUNDING FOR LANGUAGE COURSES

As part of the study abroad program, there is also financial aid available to attend language courses:

  1. If you have taken a fee-based language course at the JKU (French, Italian, or Spanish) to help you prepare for your study abroad program, then you can get the fee refunded when you start your studies abroad. Apply as part of the online scholarship application.
  2. Erasmus+: If you would like to take an intensive language course at the host university before beginning your studies abroad then you can apply for an Erasmus+ scholarship.

Students studying outside of Europe can apply for a separate scholarship for an intensive language course abroad. Please note the requirements!

Also the Julius-Raab-Foundation has a scholarship fund that provides exchange students with grants for their study abroad.

 

Applying for a Scholarship.

You can only apply for the Erasmus+ scholarship, the JKU scholarship, and the IPS scholarship after you have been accepted to the study abroad program.

Please note: All exchange students are required to complete this form!

Deadlines.

Write these dates in red in your calendar:

  • JUNE 1: for study abroad stays beginning in Winter Semester, that means in July at the earliest
  • NOVEMBER 15: for study abroad stays beginning in Summer Semester
