Language Proficiency in English.

If you wish to enroll in an English-language degree program and English is not your first language, you must provide proof of language proficiency in English.

For admission to certain academic degree programs, prospective applicants must show proof of a certain level of language proficiency. The certificates/diplomas accepted by the JKU as proof of language proficiency are listed below.

Overview of Accepted Verification

English Level B2

  • Passing grade in English in an annual report card preceding final school-leaving certificates or on the school-leaving certificate (such as a "Matura" or "Abitur") issued by an educational institution recognized in the EU, EEA, or Switzerland
  • An IB diploma in English as Language B awarded in accordance with the rules of the "International Baccalaureate Organization"
  • Certificate of completion in secondary education at a recognized institute of education in Austria or abroad, or a Bachelor's degree, or having completed a minimum of two years in an English-language Master's degree program at a post-secondary institute of education in Austria or abroad
  • TOEFL 85
  • IELTS 6.0
  • Cambridge English: First (FCE-B2), CAE (Certificate in Advanced English), CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English), BEC Higher (Business English Certificate Higher)

English Level C1

  • Passing grade in English in an annual report card preceding final school-leaving certificates or on the school-leaving certificate (such as a "Matura" or "Abitur") issued by an educational institution recognized in the EU, EEA, or Switzerland
  • School-leaving certificate(s)issued by an English-language school
  • Bachelor's degree diploma or a minimum of two years in a Master's degree program held in English (courses in English, exchange semesters, or study visits in an English-speaking country are insufficient) at a recognized post-secondary educational institution in Austria or abroad
  • TOEFL 100  
  • IELTS 7.0      
  • Cambridge English: CAE (Certificate in Advanced English), CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English), BEC Higher (Business English Certificate Higher)
  • UNIcert III
  • C1 Certificate from a university language center at a university in accordance with the European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
