The Procedure for Supplementary Examinations

If you have to pass one or more supplementary examinations in order to be admitted to your degree program, you will first receive notification "Admission to Studies Dependent on Passing XY Examinations".

You have different options depending on the type of required supplementary examination(s):

a) German only: Pre-Study Program

b) German and subject area examinations: Pre-Study Program

c) Subject area examinations only:

  1. You will not be able to enroll in a degree-seeking program: You independently study for the required examination after speaking with the examiner; detailed information in regard to the respective subject area is available below.
  2. Enroll as a non-degree seeking student: You must enroll in a non-degree seeking program if you attend (fee-based) preparation courses.

Once you have successfully passed the supplementary examinations, you will be re-registered as a degree-seeking student in the degree program you have selected to pursue.

Please note that exams (ECTS that were earned) in the non-degree program/pre-study course cannot be recognized for the regular degree program
if you have already gained your higher secondary school certificate before the time of these exams.

Supplementary Examinations - Subject Areas

The JKU offers supplementary examinations in the following subject areas and, for the most part, the corresponding preparation courses as well:

  • German
  • History
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics

Attending preparation courses (aside from German) is optional; the courses are subject to fees. Information about the examinations and preparation courses is available below.

German

If you are currently admitted as a student, you must complete the pre-study program in German.

  • It is mandatory to complete a fee-based language module up to the required level of language proficiency
  • One module consists of 3 courses
  • The following modules are offered: B1, B2 and C1
  • Placement to a higher level will be decided by the Center for Business Languages

The pre-study program consists of course modules designed to help you learn German. Depending on your intended major, you will need a B2 or C1 level of language proficiency. The modules are designed so that you can complete one level at a time during one semester.

In order to enroll in a pre-study program, you must hold a letter of admission issued by the university that you may enroll in a German-language degree program once you have successfully completed the German courses for the corresponding level of language proficiency.

When enrolled in the pre-study program, you will not yet be permitted to take any courses in your intended major.
