Bachelor's Degree in Technical Physics

You know all about the colors in the sky, the same way you understand the complexities involved in making a smartphone. Your work methodology as a physicist combined with learning how to think scientifically makes you a future co-creator of the modern world.

The Bachelor's degree program in Technical Physics focuses on base-knowledge education in natural phenomena, exploring just how advances in technology are based in natural sciences. You will learn about methods in physics, including their technical applications, from the ground up. This allows you to actively take part in current research projects conducted at industries and in science.

Why This Degree Is Particularly Attractive

  • The world is in your lab! During your undergraduate studies at the JKU Linz, you start the program off in the lab by focusing on current research topics in the field of technical physics. You will have an opportunity to be a part of an international, interdisciplinary team and take part in finding solutions to global-scale scientific problems.
  • We encourage you to study and conduct research independently. We have a strong mentoring program designed to provide individual student support. The solid educational foundation you acquire will also enable you to specialize in a sound (international) field later on.
  • Here you have space to think outside of the box! We make working, studying, and conducting research in an interdisciplinary way easier for you. Physics, biophysics, chemistry etc. are all "under one roof" at our campus university. You benefit from short distances and contact to others in different scientific areas.

Program Structure

As part of the Bachelor’s degree program, students are required to complete courses totaling 180 ECTS credits in the following subject areas:

Bachelor Program Structure Technical Physics

Studies Introduction and Orientation Phase (StEOP)

After enrolling in a Bachelor's degree program, you will be required to complete the StEOP requirements at the start of your studies. The StEOP requirements consists of certain courses that are outlined in the curriculum. If you take other academic courses before completing the required StEOP courses, you will only get limited academic credit.

Areas of Specialization

  • As part of the Bachelor's degree program in Technical Physics, you first expand your basic knowledge in physics by studying mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, waves, optics, photonics, atomic and subatomic physics, solid state physics.
  • You acquire solid education in theoretical physics: mathematical methods in physics as well as theoretical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics and thermodynamics.
  • In the field of mathematics, you learn analysis and linear algebra for physicists.
  • In addition, you will learn chemistry for physicists and are introduced to programming, biophysics, electronics and measurement technology, nanosciences and nanomaterials.
