Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering

When it comes to cyber-physical systems, machines and large plants are today's actors and stakeholders. Expand on your expertise in engineering design, computational engineering, or production engineering by earning a JKU Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering. The goal also includes independently conducting R&D as well as working in an interdisciplinary manner!

As a Mechanical Engineer, you are mainly responsible for developing, building, manufacturing, operating, servicing and recycling mechanical subsystems, but also being involved in decision-making processes regarding higher-level system issues.

In addition to broadening your expertise in the respective analytical, design, and technological disciplines, you will also improve your skill set to be able to work effectively with representatives in other disciplines, understand their technical jargon, and coordinate your system design and analysis.

Regardless of whether you are designing machines or vehicles, working in the electrical industry, automation, production, or transportation, we also focus on helping you acquire the skills you need to be able to not only independently conduct research, but also bring in your expertise to effectively apply theoretical methods to address and solve practical issues and problems.

What Makes the Master's in Mechanical Engineering Special

  • The Master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering is right on the cutting edge, particularly on account of the university's proximity to local industry and their strong involvement in JKU's range of engineering courses. The program is particularly comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and academically sound, ideally tailored to the demands of modern mechanical engineering.
  • Depending on your personal interests, specializations such as Engineering Design, Computational Engineering, or Production Engineering enable you to concentrate on fundamental topics of interest that include mechanics, thermofluid dynamics and materials science, or application-oriented topics such as lightweight construction, drive technology, robotics, and sustainable energy technologies.

  • The Master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering is distinguished primarily by an outstanding student-to-faculty ratio designed to facilitate interaction between faculty members, students, and researchers. Last but not least, Austria's largest and most beautiful university campus is a welcoming, pleasant, and comfortable work environment.

  • The Master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering emphasizes a hands-on approach. Numerous courses take place at the JKU's well-equipped laboratories and require addressing real-world issues. The JKU also has its own MakerSpace in which students can experience manufacturing technologies first-hand and implement their own ideas.

Areas of Specialization

As a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering, you will first expand on your foundation in engineering: Digital engineering with CAD, scientific computing, applied statistics for engineers, design and manufacturing projects, numerics, and optimization.

At the same time, you will also choose between one of the following three concentrations:

  • Engineering Design: Product Development, Mechanical Drive Technology, Lightweight Construction and Structural Calculation, Process Engineering and Plant Engineering, Fluid Power;;
  • Computational Engineering: Mechanics, thermofluid dynamics, robotics, control engineering;
  • Production Engineering: Materials, Products and Technologies of Plastics Engineering, Materials, Manufacturing Technologies, Sustainable Energy Technologies;
  • The final core area is your Master's thesis, including the accompanying Master's seminar.

What You Will Learn in This Program

In addition to in-depth studies into the fundamentals of mechanical engineering and your selected area of focus, above all, you will learn how to design and build future-proof machines and systems, as well as learn how to think about the overall system and share system responsibility.

  • You learn the latest scientific findings and methods, such as in the areas of signal processing, engineering mechanics, robotics, thermos-fluid dynamics, automation technology, etc.
  • You engage with digitalization and digital transformation in terms of disciplines in mechanical engineering, including how these impact people and the environment.
  • You have an opportunity to learn how to work, think and communicate in different ways, honing your social skill set to help you work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • You learn how to independently conduct research in an effort to find the solutions to address current ongoing and complex challenges.

Did you know that ... ?

Graduates in Mechanical Engineering are highly sought after! The JKU created this modern, contemporary degree program in response to the business community, industry, and the government's urgent request for highly qualified graduates in this field.

Your Career Prospects

Your Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering qualifies you to work in a wide variety of engineering-related positions, including management positions.

  • Conceptually design/construct modern machines: You work on the development of electric cars as well as laser sintering machines for 3D metal printing.
  • Plant Engineering: You create, for example, a production line for motocross machines. You design the interaction between robots and processing machines.
  • Computer Simulation of System Behavior: This involves robot movement using the control system you have designed.
  • Experimental Work: You work intensively on, for example, a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic aircraft wing part's fatigue behavior, particularly when subjected to loads on account of turbulent wind conditions on a dynamic test rig.
  • Project Management, Production Planning, System Optimization, and/or Technical Sales: As a project manager, you are responsible for developing and setting up an automatic production plant for car chassis, planning hydraulic excavator production, optimizing hydraulic drives, and/or interacting with international customers to present the latest developments in fighting tunnel fires.

On average, graduates in this field find a job 1 month after completing the program. After 3 years on the job, their average monthly gross salary is € 4.189.

Register to Enroll

Prerequisites

In order to be admitted to the Master's degree program, you must fulfill the following requirements.

  • If your first language is not the language the degree program is offered in, you will be required to submit proof of B2 level of proficiency in German.
