IK Mathematics

Susanne Pech

The IK Mathematics accompanies the KS Mathematics (held by Prof. Brunner) and should be taken parallel to the KS.

The purpose of the IK is to repeat and practice the mathematical methods discussed in the KS Mathematics by application to exercises and economic problems. By this, it intends to intensify the knowledge and understanding of essential methods frequently used in economic theory.

Note: IK is the abbreviation for 'Intensivierungskurs', i.e. a tutorial. KS is the abbreviation for 'Kurs', i.e. a lecture.

Prerequisites
Basics in mathematics and in (micro)economics are assumed to be known.

Literature
Lecture notes "Mathematics" by Prof. Brunner.

Active participation in class

  • Students take an active part by solving exercises (before attending classes) and by presenting the solutions in class.
    • The exercises for each lesson are available in KUSSS one week before that lesson (3-4 exercises per lesson).
  • At the beginning of each lesson, students can indicate in a list those exercises, whose solutions they are prepared to present in class.
    • As a tick signals your readiness to present the exercise in class, you must be present in class (sending the solution per email is no substitute!)
  • Minimum requirement of active participation:
Students have to prepare at least 50 % of all exercises.
  • By presenting exercises in class students collect points which are added to the points achieved at the exam.

Final exam

  • The written exam (75 min) is closed book.
  • Two dates: final exam and make-up exam
  • Minimum requirement to pass the exam:
19 points out of a maximum of 38 (50 % of the maximum score)

Assessment

  • The total sum of achieved points (exam and active participation) determines the grade.
  • In order to complete the IK successfully (i.e. to achieve a "Genügend" or better),
    • you have to prepare at least 50 % of all exercises for a presentation and
    • you have to achieve at least 19 points at the exam.
  • If one of the two requirements is not met, you fail.
