The European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) annual award is accompanied with € 60,000 and presented to a specialist-in-training in recognition of outstanding scientific achievement. This year's "Peter Barry Fellowship" award was presented to Dr. Jascha Wendelstein (Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry at the JKU).

Dr. Wendelstein specializes in calculating implanted artificial lenses that are a part of the cataract surgery procedure. Dr. Wendelstein remarked, "I am very honored to receive the award. We put a lot of heart and soul into our scientific projects as well as toward clinical quality so it is wonderful to be acknowledged for the work. The award gives me an opportunity as a fellow to work with Prof. Seiler in Zurich, a pioneer in the field of refractive laser and corneal surgery. This is a very special experience to grow personally in this field and bring these advancements and experience back to Linz."

The Eye Clinic at the Kepler University Hospital is a leading center in this area, with considerable experience in providing premium lenses to, for example, correct presbyopia. Research findings are implemented into everyday clinical practice. Prof. Matthias Bolz, head of department, added: "We are extremely proud of the award presented to Dr. Wendelstein by the professional European society, ESCRS. The award not only shows what is possible in Linz, it also supports Austria as an important location of research."
