Energy – the central question in chemistry and society

Life always has been dependent on the availability of energy and this is even truer for our modern life. The average per capita consumption in Austria for example is in the range of 3,2 t oil equivalents per year and still increasing. The main drivers are transportation and heating and only a small percentage is used for chemistry and chemical products. However, science is asked to come up with new solutions.

Chemical technology can play an important role in developing new more energy efficient processes, products and materials. Especially plastics, despite their poor image, can help to save resources. But also new routes to important feedstock will enable us to be successful in our quest for energy.

In our research activities we focus on new ways to come to bulk chemicals (e.g. jet fuels from mixed alcohols), to work up existing waste streams (e.g. lignocellulose as raw material) but also on “decentralized” chemistry (e.g. small scale cracking for local production of ethylene).

Our special infrastructure comprising high pressure autoclaves and related analytical equipment makes us confident to be the right partner for SME, industry and other research institutes.
