Welcome to the Institute for Physiology and Pathophysiology!

Research at the Institute for Physiology and Pathophysiology focuses on the mechanisms of medial vascular calcification. This type of calcification is common and occurs during aging, accelerated dramatically for those who have diabetes mellitus and/or chronic kidney disease.

This results in the calcification and ossification of soft tissues, especially the vessels. Calcification is linked to a significant disadvantage for cardiovascular survival, which cannot yet be treated. To date, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process are poorly understood. Research regarding these mechanisms is desperately needed in order to generate initial treatment options.
