Our society has evolved from suffering from information scarcity in the early 1990s to a society in which human attention has become one of the rarest and at the same time most valuable resources. This project has the overall ambition to reduce the information overload by initiating a general redesign of human computer interaction by making automatic information systems adaptive to human perception resources. This implies a step forward in the evolution from classic AI and machine learning approaches over pervasive computing, leveraging context and activity recognition, to a new abstraction layer, which can be summarized as Cognitive ICT. Such a proposition requires a broadly based commitment of relevant key players in the scientific community as well as in the industry and in political policy makers. Only with this scientific and industrial mobilization, it will be possible to raise the public and political awareness of the subject to the required level. In summary, the goals of this solicitation action are:

  • Unification of scientific approaches across interdisciplinary institutions
  • Vision and Roadmapping: Identify Key Research Challenges
  • Raising Awareness: Scientific and Industrial Mobilization
  • Laying Ground for an Austrian Flagship Project

We see our role in this project as initiator, catalyst and participator in the triggered developments. We aspire to achieve the scientific and industrial mobilization via workshops, round tables and small conferences with stakeholders from scientific and industrial key players. The emerging synergies from visions, ideas, demands and requirements will contribute to a general research roadmap and the building of high-potential consortiums for an Austrian Flagship project. All relevant results will be collected in a White Book which is to be published as a follow up to this project. Consequently, the tackling of R&D challenges and the refeeding of these findings into the respective disciplines will sustainably strengthen Austria’s position in the scientific world.
