The journal was founded under the name Statistische Hefte in 1960 by Günter Menges and internationalised in 1988 when its name was changed. It sees itself as a forum for the presentation and critical consideration of statistical methods with broad applications, but primarily in the social and economic sciences.
Werner G. Müller has been the current coordinating editor since 2021, with Carsten Jentsch (TU Dortmund) and Ulrike Schneider (TU Vienna) as co-editors at his side. The editorial office (statisticalpapers(at)jku.at) is managed by Alexandra Stadler.
The impact factor is currently 1.433 and the journal is in the top quartile of the SCIMAGO journal ranking, opens an external URL in a new window in the category "Statistics & Probability".
