Teaching at the LIT | CPS Lab.

In addition to courses on production automation, we also supervise theses on a wide range of topics (see section Theses below). Of course, a project work (Computer Science) can also be completed at our lab. Our target group mainly includes students of mechatronics, electronics / information technology and computer science.

Winter Term 2019

In modern production automation each physical process can be optimized via advanced software, information and communication technologies. This is referred to as "Cyber-Physical Production System (CPPS). For a better understanding of the latest trends in production technologies, this lecture provides an introduction to production automation, their structure, software development and the main components. The core topics of the course are:

  • Introduction to production automation, tasks and examples
  • Structure and devices of production automation systems (e.g., PLC, SCADA)
  • Overview on field bus and its applications
  • Real-time programming
  • PLC programming according to IEC 61131-3
  • Distributed control for more flexible and adaptive production systems
  • IEC 61499 - a domain-specific modeling language for automation
  • OPC UA
  • Outlook to upcoming technologies for production automation

Summer Term 2019

In the Lab Course UE Special Topics (Production Automation Systems) we will practice PLC programming based on the lecture contents. We will use open source tools and model software based on IEC 61131 (Function Block Diagram) and IEC 61499.

Bachelor's and Master's Theses

Bachelor's and Master's theses are assigned directly, we are however also available to supervise relevant theses in cooperation with companies. For us, interesting topics in the field of production automation include (incomplete):

  • Development of demonstrators for research and public with Lego Mindstorms (EV3)
  • PLC programming with IEC 61499
  • Communication via OPC UA
  • Modeling automation software
  • Further development of our open source tool Eclipse 4diac (Java, C++)
  • Graphical input options for Eclipse 4diac
  • Versioning of automation software
  • and much more!

We are open to suggestions for topics, but are also ready to develop a topic together with you. For this purpose, we will identify your interests and suggest theses topics based on them.

Project Topics for Master's students

In the Master's programme Computer Science a project work is scheduled. At the institute we can offer topics for the Project in Computational Engineering. These are related to our research topics, for an overview see the offered Bachelor's and Master's theses. Of course, the scope will be adjusted appropriately. If you are interested, please contact our institute.

We are also happy to supervise projects of students from other study programmes. Whether awarding credit points is possible, must be however clarified individually.
