Coding communities exist all over the world, including in Germany and Austria. In an article for the Berlin Tagesspiegel Background, Prof. Thomas Gegenhuber, together with Frauke Hinz (a former bachelor student of Prof. Gegenhuber), shows what formal education systems could learn from coding communities. Since coding communities have a great impact, policy makers would be well advised to promote and support them. What is possible is demonstrated by Coding Community Canada Learning Code, which started as a local group in Toronto and is now active across Canada. In 2019, there were more than 420 communities across the country teaching technical skills to those interested. Canada Learning Code offers several programs aimed at specific audiences. There are workshops tailored to girls, children, teens, women and teachers.
