10 Years later: Most Influential Paper Award for Work on Modeling Software Variability

In 2012, the two JKU professors Paul Grünbacher (JKU, ISSE), opens an external URL in a new window and Rick Rabiser (JKU, LIT CPS Lab, opens an external URL in a new window/CDL VaSiCS, opens an external URL in a new window), together with colleagues from the University of Waterloo (Canada), the University of Hildesheim (Germany) and the IT University Copenhagen (Denmark), published a paper on the subject of software variability, which has now, 10 years later received the "Most Influential Paper Award" of the VaMoS conference, opens an external URL in a new window. The award was presented at this year's conference, opens an external URL in a new window at the end of February.

In their publication entitled "Cool features and tough decisions: a comparison of variability modeling approaches, opens an external URL in a new window", the authors (Krzysztof Czarnecki (University of Waterloo), Paul Grünbacher (JKU), Rick Rabiser (JKU), Klaus Schmid (Universität Hildesheim) and Andrzej Wasowski (ITU Copenhagen)) systematically compare the two most widespread modeling approaches for software variability, feature modeling and decision modeling, and work out similarities with well-known approaches from practice, for example, variability management in the Linux operating system.

The work is an essential basis for the work on mastering variability in cyber-physical production systems currently conducted in the CD Lab VaSiCS.
