Abstract: Manufacturing companies face major challenges as product life cycles are shortening, product variability increases, and global markets are becoming increasingly volatile. In order to remain competitive, the production plants and facilities must be adaptable in order to be able to react quickly and efficiently to these changes. The control and automation infrastructure is a key success factor in achieving these goals. New distributed architectures are one possible approach to addressing these requirements. New interaction and communication patterns are required as well as new ways of programming the automation systems consisting of networked control units (mostly CPS).
